The month of August just isn't the same without Vic Koenning.

So here's an update on VK's latest work at North Carolina, with a bonus appearance by Dan Disch!

Quote:
Vic Koenning keeps an open Bible on his desk and speaks warily of pride.

"In the Bible," said Koenning, the associate head coach for defense at North Carolina, "they say pride comes before destruction. So you try not to have pride."

He is speaking about his role in the evolution of the 4-2-5 defense, which the Tar Heels will run in their first season under Larry Fedora. Koenning didn't invent the 4-2-5, nor did he perfect it. And even if he had, he says, it wouldn't be for him to say.

I have nothing against the Bible, but mixing the Bible and football just doesn't feel right.

I would agree if he was using the Bible in a self-righteous manner. But VK doesn't do that. I have no problem with people incorporating their faith into daily life.

"Pride cometh before the fall" is a sound bit of advice whatever one's spiritual leanings.

I don't know what it is about the Bible that people seem to find uncomfortable. Makes no sense to me.

People aren't uncomfortable with the Bible. People are uncomfortable with other people who misuse the Bible. That of course boils down to personal opinion/beliefs, but I think how VK uses it in a team context is actually pretty good.

Way to go VK! I wish he was still on the Illinois coaching staff! He may not have done to well as the head man at U of Wyoming, but I think he'll be a good fit on the defensive side of things at UNC!
