Connecticut's NBC 30 first broke the news Wednesday night that 70-year-old Calhoun is leaving his post with UConn after 26 years with the school and 40 overall. It's an oddly timed ending for one of the most legendary coaches in college basketball history. Calhoun injured his hip while riding a bike in early August and had recently publicly put his commitment to continue coaching into question.

Is it wrong if I hope Shaka goes there to torch all the VCU fans? It's probably a little bit wrong, right?

VCU or Butler will soon learn either Shaka or Brad was blowing smoke when they said they were thrilled to be at their respective institutions. My feeling is that Shaka will be the next UConn coach.

The NCAA will be laying off ten investigators.

And then if only Calipari would retire they could resort back to hiring only part-timers.

Who is Shaka Smart?
That is what I want/expect to happen in a few years.

Kevin Ollie will be named head coach at least on an interim basis.

While I don't care if they pull Shaka away, it certainly would be a slight to us, albeit a minor one. I don't know what the numbers were, but assuming we offered 3 mil for Shaka and he stayed at VCU, then UConn offered him something in the same ballpark and he goes, that just makes them look more like a destination school and us like a stepping stone.

We have John Groce, so f@#$ em.

I think Virginia Commonwealth will find it tougher sledding without

- The conference tournament happening in their own city
- Refs who will call blocking / physical play
- A much upgraded level of competition

I wouldn't be surprised to see Stevens' or Smart's or both stars start to dim once their teams are exposed to a tougher conference.

I thought there was a coach-in-waiting there, wonder if he gets more than an interim basis if they have a decent season.

I still contend that UConn fans are nowhere near as passionate as Illini fans. Example - on a business trip to Western Norway and this morning one of the team says, "hey did you hear Calhoun is retiring?" Other guy (from CT) says, "Good!"

I know Calhoun is straight as a dog's hind leg...but still he won two NCs for UConn, and yet I don't see a lot of anger, sadness, dismay by casual UConn fans over this.

In case you're wondering, the fjords are awesome...when the rain slows

Ollie is viewed by Calhoun as his successor. The AD didn't exactly see it that way.

Some say Calhoun delayed the announcement to this late, so the AD would have choice but to name Ollie as the coach.

Calhoun won 3 NC's at UCONN, so that makes your point even stronger.

If you look at the timeline, it certainly seems that way. Guy has an ego as strong as his Massachusetts accent.

On ESPN last night, Andy Katz was saying that he waited until after the summer because he wanted to follow the Dean Smith model and "see if he still had the competitive fire to coach the upcoming season." Of course, Katz left out that Smith also wanted to make sure that his hand picked successor (Bill Guthridge) was the next coach.

Ha! You assume they have ten investigators to lay off. I'm pretty sure they only have six in total.

So that's what they call that in Norway. Makes me look at the Hanseatic League in a whole new light.
