It'd be so Illinois not to get Rick George. He is the best candidate mentioned thus far -- and it's not even close.

I hate to pee on the parade here but the way George worded that statement is not promising at all. He positioned his comments with the University of Colorado specifically. It's highly unlikely that he then leave and diss an entire university. He has too much class for that.
He could have easily deflected the question without mentioning how great CU is but he didn't. If he knew there was a chance of leaving he wouldn't have done that.
When Roy Williams was at Kansas and asked about the vacant UNC job, he never mentioned how great Kansas was. He talked about his kids and even said he could give a Damn about UNC.
The fact that George mentioned CU specifically speaks volumes.

Look I'm not saying he's not coming here at all. I'd be doing back flips he he was hired but the way he mentioned CU several times in that short statement is odd.
It is nice to see him mention CU in the past tense though. Hee He.

Being a coaching search thread sick maniac, I have seen a lot of denials of interest in other jobs. That's not even a non-denial denial. I wouldn't even call that a denial.
Meaningless in the long run, but if you think that statement lends any credence whatsoever to the idea that George will stay at CU, you just aren't familiar with the usual rhetoric around these things.

I hope you're right. I just think there are better was he could have phrased it without dissing CU IF he leaves.

George is not the only quality candidate
To think the sky will fall if RG (George not Guenther) stays in Boulder is foolish.
There are very strong, qualified candidates with UI backgrounds and O&B in their blood other than George. He may get the nod but Wax or Whitman would be quality hires and able to calm the seas very quickly. The key is for the administration to move quickly if they favor a person with a UI background. If not, then any outside candidate will have to be properly vetted and it will likely extend the hire until after Jan 1. Huge disadvantage on the football coach issue.

I agree. Would love to have to have George (grand slam) but our fan base would feel slighted and dejected with Wax or Whitman. Both home run hires.
Let's not get drunk on George.
I don't think the issue here is whether George would consider coming home, but rather do we have anybody in this University with the competence to bring him home. I'm pretty skeptical about that.
I sure hope this poster isn't on the search committee, but I think these comments must be how people around U of I often think.
Comparing Whitman (AD at a D-3 school) and Shawn Wax (never been an AD) to George is like comparing a major leaguer to a single A player. George is operating at a completely different level than these guys or Tom Michael. There is no comparison.

If we can't get Rick George and if Mike Small's not interested, I think you've got to look at other Power 5 ADs who aren't highly paid but know how to raise money and pick a football coach.

I read that statement and it screams he wants to come here, to me.
Mike Small is a great coach, can raise money, and is an excellent speaker. He's one of the all time great Illini (as is his dad Bill Small). Yet, it's a huge leap for him to be an AD.
One reason I like George is that he's a football guy who has tons of other relevant experience. The AD's job basically boils down to the football program - if you hire a great football coach almost nothing else matters as the football program carries the whole department.
I like your ideas on McCaw and Bjork - great things happening in football at both programs. I'm sure there are other Power 5 guys that fit this profile. That's who we should be thinking about beyond George instead of lower level U of I guys.
