Let us envision three scenarios ...

Look, I don't mean to sound glib, but these are all basically the same scenario. We hire a permanent coach and it either turns out well (best case scenario) or it turns out badly and we face a buyout situation somewhere in the indefinite future (worse case scenario). The only substantive difference is whether we make the hire now or at this same time next year. And I'm sorry but the facts that 1) there may be slightly more competitive market for coaches this season than most and 2) it could hypothetically turn off a potential AD candidate who doesn't care for the coach we hypothetically hire ahead of him simply do not justify the massive risks associated with a 16-month long interim head coach situation.

Better said than I, and in considerably fewer words :thumb:

And again, if stable chain of command is so important, why is an interim AD firing Mike Thomas and hiring a new AD?

If Thomas or Kowalcyzk hires a new coach, you can easily kick the AD can down the road to a new chancellor who can make direct, empowered decisions about everyone below them in the hierarchy as they see fit. If you get it right, no one is going to care who hired our awesome coach, and if you get it wrong, 2018 is just as good as 2016 to get your ducks in a row, and you don't have to decimate the roster getting there.

I'm done belaboring this. People either want to see the truth or they don't.

Who are these great AD candidates lining up for the Illinois job? I don't see any. All the names mentioned, from Michael to Wax, are not turning down the Illinois AD job because we hired Brohm or Babers instead of extending Cubit.

Try to hire a new head coach with the interim AD..... I would say that with as many vacancies as are available, this is a gamble at best.

EVERY hire is a gamble at best. This is kind of the go-to talking point for defenders of this decision, and it requires building the world's most impressive and unlikely strawman (the full-time Illinois AD who makes nothing but bulletproof hires).

Best case scenario, you hire someone like Dino Babers and you achieve that desired result. Worst case scenario, you hire someone who is not a very good coach and picks you only because they were not in line for jobs like Mizzou, South Carolina, Miami, USC, etc.

So the best case scenario would be something great, and the worst case scenario is exactly what we have. Phew. Bullet dodged.

Jeesh dude. Talk about overreacting. Top 10 engineering program in the world, but hey, might as well shut it down if we can't get our sports in order. :tsk:

I remember when that was top 2...

Love that she's still learning about this process. Awesome. She makes sure to mention she talked with the president and board members, but doesn't mention our interim AD. I think it's pretty clear by now he did not want Cubit, but was powerless here. He gives another ho-hum answer to his hiring in this article. Glad we can let someone who is "still learning" make these major decisions but not someone who actually works in the AD and just might know what he's doing.

While Illinois has a 5-7 record this season under Cubit, Killeen said it's not "anything to be fundamentally ashamed of. Of course, we want to win the Big Ten."

"I would make the case that the team has been competitive in all the games that I've watched," including Saturday's loss to Northwestern, he said.

"I'm very much looking forward to next season and the recruitment that coach Cubit will be able to undertake next year," Killeen said. "This is a time of rebuilding, and we've got great leaders in place. And I'm very comfortable with where we are right now."

"

Or, as most Illini fans would say, "wow, it's amazing that the score is somewhat close considering how incompetent our offense is. Wow, the B1G has some really bad teams this year,"

Wow. Those are bad quotes. I guess, what's he going to say but I don't know what to make of that.

I have no words. The systemic acceptance of mediocrity in our football program is embarrassing. Have university officials forgotten that we're still in the Big 10?

well, you can't argue with clueless. I think that's the defense they've settled on.

Reading Killeen and Wilson quotes is truly vomit inducing. "How many empty buzzwords do we need to use to make it sound like we know what we're doing?"

I can answer for me. I am still withdrawing. It is hard for me to decide if I am mad enough to try and force myself to not watch anymore. But I am definitely mad. I am still hoping for a change that won't come. Maybe some one with big money feels the way I do.

This is being run by people that don't know what they are doing.

This is exactly where I'm at. As of right now, I don't plan on renewing my tickets or even going to a game next year. I'll still watch on TV, and follow these boards/twitter. However, I also deleted any official Illini accounts from Facebook/Twitter. Childish maybe, but every time I think of this situation it is just infuriating. To the point where seeing Bill Cubit's picture brings up irrational hatred. I'm glad it is only 2 years, I think he is a horrible coach.

Agreed, this just gets worse every day. Please wake me when this nightmare is over!

It was mentioned before in this thread, but where in the hell are the journalists asking these relevant and pointed questions that we are asking in here?
