Gotta be cubs.

Wtf were we fed this bs all season about having all this money to spend and then go and do the same old !!!! again in free agency.

Well, sad to see him go, but happy we aren't going to be paying him 200 mil+. His numbers offensively could spike on the north side, because he will just have to play ball up there not be a huge focal point of their offense.

Let's prepare our offer for Alex Gordon and maybe see what we could do for Cargo.

Yeah. Let's just hope the Cardinals can put that $200 million+ to good use, like they did when Pujols stiffed them.

Not gonna ride the hyperbole train and say that the Cubs put a dagger to the Cards, but the Heyward move hurts, right? Will be interesting to see how the Cards counter.

I don't know if that is a dagger, but it hurts because he is a fine baseball player and person. The Cubs can write the check and it is their money. Hopefully we can add Alex Gordon or someone of a similar caliber. It will hurt more if we don't and then the extra draft picks we get for the QO's that were turned down and the competitive balance pick we get are all busts.

0 for 2 on Mo's Hot Stove wish list. I would like to be able to get Gonzales from Rockies but not sure what we have to give up. I'd love to give them Matt Adams😀

Wow. This is a real nutpunch. Losing Lackey to the Cubs I could handle. This, though? This. Is. Bad.

None of the other FAs out there really excite me other than Upton.

And if anyone thinks Alex Gordon is the answer, well, you're more optimistic than I.

Hope the Cubs rediscover their epic collapsing ways, but I don't think that's as likely with Theo at the helm.

Gonna be a long 4 years.

I agree on losing Lackey. Obviously, wanted Heyward, but our outfield talent is young, cheap and good (other than Holiday). Would still like to upgrade 1st base. No idea who or how. Otherwise, I like the roster.

Worst offseason we've had in a while.

That's really impossible to say until at least a couple months of baseball have been played. Remember who won the offseason last year? The San Diego Padres.

And I think it's important to remember the Cubs basically gave us 2 draft picks for Heyward and Lackey. And if there is one thing I trust about this organization, it's their ability to find and develop talent.

Draft picks are a total crapshoot and, more importantly, take a long time to help. Which is why the Blackhawks did great to with their 11:50 trade of Saad.

Agreed, but the more picks you get the better chance you have of getting a good one right? Like I said, I'd much rather have Heyward over a pick. But I'm happy with a draft pick over Lackey, as long as we find a SP this offseason.

Well, we are obviously way better at scouting, drafting and developing than free agency. That is the main reason we have had long term viable success and I don't think that changes. You are right it is a crapshoot, but that has been our money maker.

Guys, we still can be winners this offseason. Heyward is not the guy who puts us over the top for 23 million a year, he is a very good ball player, but if we play our cards right we can get more for that money through a few players.

Do not forget, Alex Gordon, Justin Upton and Yoennis Cespedes are still available and all should come cheaper. Gordon is, IMO, our best fit and probably a better fit for our lineup than Heyward. There is a reason KC is up in arms about the prospect of losing him, it also helps he has Workd Series pedigree. I like Cespedes at this point more than Upton, but would be thrilled with either one. Should we end up with Span or Fowler, then you can color me worries unless Piscotty and Pham so they are everyday full time players and Holliday and the rest of the guys stay healthy.

For sure, the Cards have been superior at drafting and developing talent. But the point is, taking picks for starters is a setback for everyone. Major setback.
