The thing that boggled me is that for most of our games, it seemed we moved the ball extremely well on the first drive and then just stalled.

Its like we got scare without ferg.....we have safe play calling.....play calling that would make sure we wouldnt get beat 56-0 instead of play calling to make a game 21-24...smh

1st 20 plays or so were scripted...then opposing DC makes adjustments.....we don't.

Yep. Never liked Cubits offense and it has not been good since Nate graduated. Too predictable and can't run if you really have to. We could have won 6-8 games this year if the offense was better. The problem was not all talent. A lot of it was scheme and play calling.

Yes BC pointed that out very early and often this season.

With Dudek and Hardee coming back next year do you think they'll be an 8-4 team or 9-3?

Yes BC pointed that out very early this season and often. Well you recruited them, you coach them, and I guess then you should throw them under the bus in the press and not take any of the responsibility. It's not all his fault but the staff should take some of the responsibility.

I rather run a 4-3 defense than that wierd leo star crap banks was running.....i wonder what scheme phair will run?....

and our offense....sheesh smh...i hope little cubit has watch some patriots tape or something for our offensive scheme....cause wes cant scramble....and falls on contact outta of fear of being injured

if we get the offense together we can be really good

Our only hope for a better offense would have been if little Cubes was calling the plays. This is going to be a great season...

6-6. Actually, I have no idea. The team will be experienced, but I worry not big or fast enough to make a real run.

One criteria in hiring a new HC should be that they don't have a son in the coaching ranks. It's tough for any of us to be objective when evaluating our own son.

Now our only hope is to retain bellamy....hes gonna be our recruiting force....Tho i d think we actually need someone with experience as a co-offensive coordinator

This made me lol.

Edit: but I love your optimism.

It's the holidays, let Kramer dream!

In his defense, we have a lot of experience returning, maybe this could be a magical season.

Though with Michigan and Michigan St. on the schedule, our best case scenario is 10-2.

Of course hosting North Carolina, Iowa, and Minnesota and playing at Wisconsin and Northwestern, there might be a couple/few more losses sprinkled in...

You know what, I say 10-2. Why not??!!! Kramer and I are saving room on the bandwagon!!

Honestly I was being sarcastic. I have no faith in this staff.

That's how I took it! As to the dropped passes, yes that didn't help, but if your offense only works when you have an 80% completion rate, you ought to try something else.

I got so sick of BC talking about drops, he was trying to divert attention from larger issues.

Yes, larger issues. Where do you start? 3rd or 4th and short and running Chase Crouch on the same play everyone has seen 20 times? Trying to run up the middle when you have absolutely no ability to do so on short yardage into the teeth of the D and getting stuffed? Throwing the same out patterns many times out of bounds? Running the same play 2 or 3 times in a row to make sure the defense knows exactly how to stuff you? Or perhaps trying to run out the clock before the half and actually giving the ball back to the opponent to tack on another score and increase their lead?

I have some issues with Mackovic, but if you witnessed his play calling you'd realize what a clever in-game coach can be. As Dick Vermeil said of him on one broadcast, and Vermeil was a pretty knowledgeable coach: "He runs when you think he'll pass, and passes when you're thinking run". Has Cubit ever impressed you in this way?

Cubits more like, we are gonna pass all over the field and theres nothing you can do about it, unless of course we drop every other pass and the wr's constantly run wrong routes...

There may have been issues that were larger, but I'd say the dropped passes was a pretty big one and not merely an 'excuse'. Here's an article from Robert outlining our 50 (FIFTY!) dropped passes, when they happened, and how much each one hurt us:

http://illiniboard.com/2015/11/06/check-the-tape-50-drops/

That was written before the Purdue game I believe, so we hit 50 drops with 4 games still to play.

I don't know how many passes we typically drop in a year, but that seems like a pretty big deal. And that doesn't even include all the times the receivers ran the wrong route.

It was a big enough deal that I think it was mentioned multiple times on each tv broadcast by the commentators.

So every drop should be caught? Do they analyze the tape on every missed block and count those and report on them? What qualifies the drop and who does the qualifying? I know drops were a problem but the offense was very lackluster, this point can't be argued.

I know he brought it up at every turn. If I was a WR hearing how often it was brought up that would have pissed me off that coach, who says it's all about the kids keeps telling the press I can't catch the ball.

Maybe the scheme should have been adjusted, maybe concentrate on running the ball more. The announcers brought it up because BC brought it up, a lot of parroting coming out of the booth.

What's the definition of doing something over and over and getting the same results. There is always going to be drops.

I'm with you Kramer. Dropped passes were a factor but the other issues pointed out (play calling etc.) were as big if not bigger issues. You have to be able to pound out a yard running the ball occasionally and mix it up (run/pass).
