The AD Search as Basketball Recruitment

  • The In-State Burger Boy: Rick George. Observers and fans agree, this is the type of guy Illinois should - nay - NEEDS to land if it is going to have serious success. Sources from his camp say it's not happening. Sources close to the University - who desperately want it to be so - have a more hopeful outlook. Go figure!
  • The Sort-of Sleeper: Craig Tiley. Under our noses despite being so far away. Said in the past that he wants this spot. Has unparalleled track record of building things that succeed. Still, doubters seem to get hung up on whether he's tall enough to play PG in the B1G, er, sorry...whether he knows enough about the revenue sports since he was a tennis guy.
  • The Dark Horse: Sean Frazier. On paper, meets all of the needs. Unfortunately, many people are getting hung up on intangible, unprovable nonsense, like the fact that he keeps switching AAU te- I mean, isn't "an Illinois guy." High chance of haunting us later at a conference rival if we miss on higher targets while botching our chance to take him.
  • The Legacy(ies): Josh Whitman and Tom Michael. Connected to the university six ways from Sunday. Also their best high major offer. Even Illinois can't fumble these away.....right? ("Yes, they can!" - Brian Cardinal)

Just a side note. Illinois didn't fumble away Cardinal. There is no one who could have predicted what he would become, and Henson had a better recruit at that position who also had Illinois ties: Ryan Blackwell. You wouldn't have found anyone who would have taken Cardinal over Blackwell. Of course, in hindsight, it was a bad move. But Henson worried about sitting Cardinal with Cardinal's dad on staff.

Ok, back to the AD search. :)

Hypothetical question: Let's say you are hired as the next AD of Illinois, what are the most important first steps/decisions you make as AD?

Clean house athletics wise retain some coaches Bellamy ,hecklinski, scheelhause, but for most part clean house football, basketball men's and women's. Call every alum possible round up the troops address the fans, get support for the program back.:shield::chief:

I doubt Jim Hackett would consider an AD position at a BIG school. He is a Michigan Alum, varsity lettermen, and supporter of the program. He retired from a successful career as a multi-millionaire. I believe he jumped in to help out his alma mater, not as a way to get into the AD business. That said, he would be a really good hire. As much as it pains me to say it, Michigan is a really good model on how to run a University and Athletics program.

If Craig Tiley wants the job though, he is my first choice.

All of the candidates that have been mentioned George, Tiley, Frazier, Hackett, Whitman, and Michael as well as our interim AD are all good candidates. Of course, I would be most pleased with any of the first four names mentioned.

I feel like Frazier would be a great get seeing as he already runs a successful athletic program in the state of Illinois.

Groce gets a one year mulligan due to an absolutely ridiculous injury situation.

Perhaps he can also be the link to get Khan back in force.

Man, that would be awesome. For some reason it seems like in the past the University has done everything in it's power to burn bridges with the potential big money donors. :tsk: Would be nice to turn that tide.

More like his wife wants to return home, his work in Australia is largely done and he relishes the opportunity/challenge at an institution he loves.

The reason I said that is that I read where the Aussie Open under his watch had grown to new heights, but if that scandal goes full blown I would thing every tournament would lose sponsors, etc. Might be a great time to leave while it is on top. :thumb:

Did quick-check: UI DIA budget is around $81 mil per year. Tennis Australia was around $180 mil a year a year or two ago and has grown since Tiley took over.

From what I have read, his role has been what an AD would do - with the exception of perhaps hiring coaches, but on a much, much larger stage.

Seems he is a low risk as far as "experience" is concerned.

Yep. He's got the experience that matters. His supposed biggest weakness -- that he lacks direct experience and connections in the revenue sports -- is a lesser concern at this unprecedented low point in our history. I mean, yes, if we had a functional DIA and our only failing was a string of bad-luck hires, an industry insider might be the answer. But those kinds of people tend towards conventional and "safe" options (recall our prior experienced AD who looked right past the man himself and hired Coach Beckman largely because of glowing recommendations from some big-name A-listers). That approach is not the solution for a program in free fall. We need a top-to-bottom rebuild of the whole rotten works which requires a dynamic, visionary CEO type with a track record of revitalizing moribund organizations who won't be beholden to the established ways of doing things. Now I'm starting to sound like the Korn Ferry flow chart but you get my point -- there's only one candidate I know of that fits that description. Let's go get him.

Take an honest evaluation of every single person within the DIA that isn't directly connected to a specific program and fire anyone who doesn't make the grade. After that I immediately clean house within the football program. There's no point in saving any of them, the program will pretty much have a clean slate so let's actually fill that slate out with people who are perceived to have value at least (and hopefully they have actual value too).

The guy walked into Guenther's office with a detailed, methodical plan that involved Illinois tennis winning a national championship. ILLINOIS TENNIS - a program that hadn't even won the conference since the Truman administration.

And he f**king did it.

Hire this man.

FWIW, I'm pretty sure it was the relationship between Ron Guenther and Shad that led to the donation for the Khan Tennis Complex.

The second most important criteria for a successful AD (after fixing football) is finding a person who connects well with people like Shad, Jerry Colangelo, the Bielfeldt family, and the I Fund Loyalty Circle donors.

If UI can't land George, I continue to hope for someone like Bowen or Frazier.

Combined with your avatar, I definitely read this line in Ron Swanson's voice.

Are there people who don't read ALL of Matt's posts in Nick Offerman's voice?

And I'm with him and others, if this turns out to be the actual play, I'm willing to forgive MOST of the last few months.
