Wonder what the administration is doing right now with all of the attrition going on sitting back and pretending that it is not happening? Something needs to be done these athletes have no reassurance and rightly so. This is the worst I have ever seen it and fearfully it will get worse. STOP THE BLEEDING for gods sake !

Too late now, might just as well go with the flow and hope they get a good AD

To be fair, it's not like we actually know exactly what has gone on behind the scenes. All we really know is that there is no AD yet and the last Trustee meeting didn't have it on the agenda.

For all we know, things might already be completely squared away and we are all set to hire Tiley but can't publicize anything until after the Australian Open is finished for obvious reasons. Honestly, that is the least complicated scenario that checks all of the boxes in terms of what we can observe here on the ground.

On the other hand, this is the University of Illinois, so assuming such a simple explanation that makes so much sense as that is actually true requires a bit of a leap of faith at this point. Maybe they really are screwing this up pretty horribly. We just have to kind of wait and see until the end of January. If at that point there is no answer, then I think fans are more justified to be pissed.

Sunk cost. That's why pretty much everyone was howling when the interim tag was lifted from Cubit. We punted, there are negative consequences. Not a damn thing can be done about it now.

I really hope you're right. Unfortunately, there's an even simpler explanation that also checks all the boxes - that no one is driving this clown car and we'll botch this hire like we've botched all other hires in recent memory...

Michigan went about AD search in right way. Pursued Northwestern's Jim Phillips multiple times, I'm told, as well as other veteran ADs.

Michigan has their guy, apparently. Former team mate of Harbaugh....

New AD for scUM
Manuel will step in for Hackett, who took the job on an interim basis 15 months ago. In that time, Hackett brought head coach Jim Harbaugh to Ann Arbor, signed a contract extension for men's basketball coach John Beilein and brokered a nine-figure apparel deal with Nike.

Michigan, where interim really is just an adjective.

If Tiley's taking the job, the news will almost definitely break within a few days after the Aussie Open wraps.

Come on, now. We can't start comparing ourselves with Michigan just because we're both flagship AAU/public ivy universities for large Midwestern states and have been competing against each other in the same athletic conference for 119 years.

Have heard from faculty member who cares enough to find out that we should know by end of next week. Honestly, don't know how much it lines up with everything we've heard but thought I'd share

If Craig Tiley is still in play, that makes sense. Australian Open runs til Sunday. Believe Rick George and Tiley still in running

The AD Search as Basketball Recruitment

  • The In-State Burger Boy: Rick George. Observers and fans agree, this is the type of guy Illinois should - nay - NEEDS to land if it is going to have serious success. Sources from his camp say it's not happening. Sources close to the University - who desperately want it to be so - have a more hopeful outlook. Go figure!
  • The Sort-of Sleeper: Craig Tiley. Under our noses despite being so far away. Said in the past that he wants this spot. Has unparalleled track record of building things that succeed. Still, doubters seem to get hung up on whether he's tall enough to play PG in the B1G, er, sorry...whether he knows enough about the revenue sports since he was a tennis guy.
  • The Dark Horse: Sean Frazier. On paper, meets all of the needs. Unfortunately, many people are getting hung up on intangible, unprovable nonsense, like the fact that he keeps switching AAU te- I mean, isn't "an Illinois guy." High chance of haunting us later at a conference rival if we miss on higher targets while botching our chance to take him.
  • The Legacy(ies): Josh Whitman and Tom Michael. Connected to the university six ways from Sunday. Also their best high major offer. Even Illinois can't fumble these away.....right? ("Yes, they can!" - Brian Cardinal)

Good summary - I'm hoping that somehow we do the right thing and land one of the top 3. By the way at least 2 of the 3 have stated that this was a dream job...but we'll find a way I'm sure to blow it.

I would jump for joy if it ended up being Tiley. He does everything with excellence and is a great leader. Plus, he loves the university.

He would be a home run in my opinion.

Absolutely. Thus, I'm certain this has no chance of happening.

Hypothetical question: Let's say you are hired as the next AD of Illinois, what are the most important first steps/decisions you make as AD?

Firing the entire football staff and bringing in PJ Fleck at whatever price is takes and give him the $ to hire the staff he wants.

Explain during my introductory press conference that my accent is actually South African, not Australian, although its understandable that people would make that mistake.
