Not sure DaMonte is seen as a PG at this point. If so, he will be fighting for time with two other guys if we get Frazier.

If he is considered a shooting guard/wing then he will be competing with JCL, Jordan. DJ Williams. Nichols, Pickett and possibly Goodwin or similar additional top wing. Could be 7 guys for 2 starting spots unless we go small.
I don't see many minutes for him unless he really comes on or somehow takes over the PG role.

His path to playing time, at least early, is entirely predicated on his ability to morph into a PG. Otherwise, he'll be buried behind JCL and AJ.

Exactly, he's a combo guard so if he can't play point he'll be buried more but if he can then he'll get solid time at the 1/2 because of his ability to run the team and we may want to play with 2 PGs.

Speaking of PG's, Groce and staff watched an awful lot of games this weekend involving 2018 PG's --Courtney Ramey, Ayo and Kezo Brown. Seems strange that we would take 3 PG's in a row.

Don't know if this has been mentioned but Carte'Are Gordon 2018 PF is planning on visiting Illinois in August.

Are you implying that the Frazier intrigue may be overblown? You're an entertaining poster, TCTORNADO, and I'm sure a handsome man, but I wish you weren't always so dang cryptic.

Well I guess the proper response is, in todays game there is one position for which you cannot have too many bodies, PG. Let the cream rise to the top, and those who find themselves lacking in PT can enter the transfer market. :noidea: A welcome position for Illini basketball to be in. ;)

I think it has a lot to do too with the fact that right now we have a PG and a CG. We need a back up if we don't land Frazier or Scruggs type PG this year and so 18 is huge. Regardless, the talent in 18 is so good that it would be hard to pass on any of those players. There is definitely room for 3 straight PGs, especially after the lack of depth at those positions these last few years (which if you look at it, we will have 3 Pgs this year anyway).

Nope not at all, but I can tell you that the Ramey recruitment has heated up big time now that Tilmon is on board. The impact of Tilmon's commitment in that area is particularly huge. See my Gordon visit post also.

Seriously? Right now we don't have commitments from Frazier, Scruggs or any other '17 PG. If we get no PG in '17, which is entirely possible, we will really need to land one in '18.

Now if we sign Frazier/Scruggs as well as Da'Monte in a few months, you may see them not emphasize '18 PGs as much.

You always keep recruiting at every position. Especially after our multi-year cluster!!!! at getting a quality PG.

There was a lot of buzz around Ramey being a very high level player. Ayo has been rising like crazy this spring/summer and is sitting at 31st overall player in '18. I think it is a case of you just don't pass on that high level of talent no matter what is on the roster. At the very least you keep the recruiting up as things can change significantly over a year.

Awesome to hear re: Ramey. That kid has an 'it' factor. I'd be thrilled with any of the top local '18 PGs. Good chance that all of Ramey, Dosunmu, and Garland end up in the top 50.

Totally agree. Someone proposed that we take 3PG's every 4 classes. I like that idea. We really need to consider that after this year, unless JCL takes a step forward, the only PG on our roster is Lucas. Da'Monte is a combo and I'll admit that I have not seen him play enough to evaluate potential PG skills. This makes Frazier even more of a priority and if someone got hurt the following year, it would make an '18 PG even more valuable. When you have guards that can score and distribute, which Groce prefers, you can play some of those guys together.

Strike while the iron is hot, right? Very interesting and good news. My '18 dream class: Ramey (or Dosunmo or Garland), Gordon and redshirt Pickett. Those are going to be difficult pulls, to say the least. Those kids are going to be offered by just about everyone. And, no, don't ask where the rides are coming from. If we do oversign, it will only be for an elite level player.

Gordon would be a huge get. Really convenient that right at the lowest point in our recent history, the Champaign/Peoria/STL metro belt has begun pumping out P5 level talent for the first time in years. Mike Finke, Tilmon, Goodwin, DMW, Pickett, Gordon, Ramey, and Tim Finke in the span of three years is pretty sick. Not that they're all dying to play at UIUC, but I wish we could take them all.

You forgot Tatum, cook and Sneed. Jg lost two of these to Iowa and kstate. St. Louis has pumped out some plenty of talent the past 6 years. 8-10 top 100 and 3 five stars and not sure ui has been close except Sneed. Only got mh and he is from Illinois as are tilmon, Pickett and Goodwin. West of the river makes a big difference.

I understand your point, but in basketball terms missing on Sneed was negated (and possibly exceeded) by getting Kipper.

Tyler Griffey and one of my all time favs, Arch, were from West of the river.:)

Granted. But two points, if I may. When we talk about downstate, lumping St. Loo in with cities like Peoria and Springfield is a misnomer. Yes, it's where some prospects come from, but it dwarfs the tiny downstate cities. St. Louis always generates players. Second, given its size, we've largely sucked at drawing players from St. Louis, particularly west of the river.

While Mizzou is down, time to make hay. Tilmon's commitment helps a ton.

Isn't all of St. Louis west of the river? :p
