Look for Goodwin to conclude the AAU season as an uncommitted prospect. Frazier has never even set foot on campus and is not going to commit before doing so.

St. Loo proper, sure. But not the metro area, which is what I was referring to. But thanks for the geography lesson. ;-)

I knew what you were getting at.. just couldn't resist.
There does seem to be some barrier there where we've gotten more interest traditionally from the ESL/metro east than from STL itself or the west.

It would be great if we could expand "our" territory there westward. Not suggesting we will or should lock it down, but be more on par with Mizzou and Arkansas. KU and the other big dogs will always be players for the elite kids.

Really hoping Kansas is in with 2018 5 star PFs, leaving the playing field for Gordon less stacked. Same with Ramey.

Goodwin reminds me of a little bit shorter version of Nick Anderson at the same age.

I have been thinking the same thing , Goodwin might not be as good from outside . but both just have that "hate to lose "quality Nick was only 6'4 in the NBA so not much size diffrence

Nick

Nick Anderson was 6'6". The majority of the Flying Illini team were in the 6'6" to 6'8" range.

Goodwin has a game more like Serge and Ray Rice....

I remember watching old Flyin' Illini games and thinking that if you squinted your eyes and blurred the jerseys, they looked like an NBA team. Ridiculous length and explosiveness.

Nick was closer to 6-4. May have been the shortest starter of the Flying Illini.

The listed heights were mostly inaccurate. Illini great Eddie Johnson once said that he was 6-9 in high school, 6-8 at Illinois, and 6-7 in the NBA. :)

Yeah, Deon Thomas was listed at 6'9" as well, but when you watched him playing against those Michigan teams he was always 2-3" shorter than their 6'9" guys. :)

5-star kids anywhere are going to be very difficult to pry away from the blue bloods, and St. Louis isn't a whole lot different there. For the rest of them, the areas west of the river are primarily Mizzou territory, so they simply start of less sympathetic to Illinois and we have a longer way to go to make up ground. I'd still like to see us make more inroads, because the really depressing thing is the sheer number of Mizzou fans on the east side of the river. Growing up in that area, it was incredibly obnoxious.

Always love the annual point of the summer recruiting period where current recruits are compared to the Flyin' Illini.

Totally agree. Someone proposed that we take 3PG's every 4 classes. I like that idea. We really need to consider that after this year, unless JCL takes a step forward, the only PG on our roster is Lucas. Da'Monte is a combo and I'll admit that I have not seen him play enough to evaluate potential PG skills. This makes Frazier even more of a priority and if someone got hurt the following year, it would make an '18 PG even more valuable. When you have guards that can score and distribute, which Groce prefers, you can play some of those guys together.

When I watch Da'Monte William play I see pure point guard skills. I'm not at all concerned about his ability to play the point; I am concerned about his motor. I don't think he can get much playing time as an off guard; he doesn't shoot well enough from the outside.

It's a shame he isn't being used as a primary point guard in HS. I realize his HS team doesn't have a lot of height, but watching him play the high post is a real waste of his development. He's the spitting image of his father, imo, a bit more athletic although his outside shooting isn't yet as good. But I think he'll be a point guard in college or a transfer/bust. I'd be surprised if Groce recruited him to be anything but a point. Just for the record, I was one of those that said JCL will never be a point guard (and now believe that more than ever).

The majority (all but PJ Bowman) were 6'4 to 6'7. I played summer ball with those guys at IMPE. They laughed at their listed heights.

Nick wasn't that great of an outside shooter coming out of H.S. He did most of his damage slashing, especially along the baseline.

Pretty much agree with this. He may be a "combo guard," but he's way more towards the PG side of combo than JCL. Every video I saw of JCL showed an excellent outside shooter, who rarely penetrated to make things happen. Sometimes, these guys develop PG skills, but more often they don't. Da'Monte is a completely different type of player. He thrives on getting into the lane and using his athleticism.
