Heyward is hitting .352 with 3 RBIs in his last 5 games (including his 0 for 4 performance last night). Maybe he will slowly but surely get that bat going just in time to do monster things in the playoffs.

Maybe...

He cut the toe tap a few weeks ago and it's paying major dividends. Anything he can contribute outside his gold glove is icing on the cake for October.

Addison Russell's catch was mind blowingly awesome

One of the best plays, of many, he's made this season. The most impressive part of that play was how much ground he covered. He was only a few feet off second base when the ball went in the air!

The sweep brings the number down to 16.

Time for Maddon to give Chapman a breather.

Awesome job by the pen working 5 shutout innings after Montgomery came out.

Magic Number = 14

Their last 31 games have matched the 31 they started the year with: 25-6.

I'm looking back at the doom and gloom from many Cubs' fans in June/July and smile. Anything can happen in October, but there's no denying the difference in feel from the 2008, 2003, 1998, 1984, 1969 teams. I'd go back to 1945, but I doubt many here have that as a frame of reference.

Enjoy the ride!

40(!) games over .500.

Not sure I will ever see that again in my lifetime.

I'm 42.

If the Cubs go 0-28 over the remainder of the season, this will still be the 9th best Cubs team of my lifetime in terms of wins.

Also, if the Cubs go 0-28, the Cardinals would have to go 17-13 to knock the Cubs out of a single game playoff to determine the division winner.

Unreal.

To further put this season into perspective, through 134 games, the Cubs are up 1 game on the 2015 Cardinals, who finished 100-62.

In other news, Soler scratched from the lineup today with an in-grown toenail. I wouldn't wish that pain on my worst enemy. Hoping for a quick recovery.

Arrieta vs. Bumgarner today at 1:20 CT. Can't wait!

There's going to be some legitimately decent players left off this playoff roster. Here's what I'm coming up with.

LOCKS:
Lester
Arrieta
Hendricks
Lackey

Chapman
Rondon
Strop (if healthy)
Edwards
Grimm
Montgomery

Contreras
Ross

Rizzo
Zobrist
Bryant
Russell
Baez

Fowler
Heyward
Soler

That's 20. I have to believe Montero is all but a lock. I also think Madden will want a 3rd LHP meaning Wood is close to a lock. That leaves 3 spots. I see LHH off the bench as a problem so you'd think that means LaStella is a lock. The last 2 spots come down to Coghlan vs. Szczur? And Hammel vs. Cahill?

I don't think Joe Smith fits in here.

This team is going to be extremely difficult to beat in a 5 or 7 game series. That pitching has been so good, all year really but especially recently. Grimm coming around has been a big boost.

I was actually feeling pretty good after game 2 in '84 and in about the seventh inning of game 6 in '03. :( My dad, who passed away last year, played hookey from school so he could listen to the last game of the '45 World Series on the radio.

Hammel has been getting roughed up recently. He has only made it to 6 innings 2 of his last 4 starts and tonight isn't looking much better. I wonder if something is bothering him or if it's just late in the season and he is running out of gas.

Considering he runs out of gas every year, I'm guessing the latter.

Hopefully he's the odd man out come playoff time.
