Division champions!! What an incredible season it has been. Enjoy the ride.

The next magic number is for best record in the NL for home field, which is 10. If the Cubs play .500 baseball for the rest of the season, the Nats would have to go 15-1 to surpass the Cubs.

Fun lineup today:

1. Szczur, RF
2. Baez, SS
3. Soler, LF
4. Contreras, C
5. Coghlan, 1B
6. Almora, CF
7. La Stella, 3B
8. Kawasaki, 2B
9. Lackey, P

Lackey must be loving it.

Lackey is probably grinding his teeth into powder, looking at that lineup.

That said, it's still better than the Brewers'.

Congrats to you and your boys in blue on the division. It will be tough to be your Cubbies 3 out of 5 or 4 out of 7.

We talked the manager in the restaurant to turn on the game in the bottom of the ninth as the Cubbies tied it up. Made for a nice evening to watch the victory.

I'm glad the Brewers aren't in the wildcard race. They have had our number recently. (Although, that may be a factor of us resting guys and playing different lineups)

Yep, Maddon put out the JV squad the past 2 nights. Brewers will be a good team in 2-4 years.

More concerning to me is Arrieta doesn't look like himself with Contreras catching. That alone might be reason enough to keep Montero on the postseason roster (Lester/Ross, Hendricks/Contreras, Arrieta/Montero, Lackey/Contreras).

The way Montero and Coghlan have been hitting of late, I can see La Stella being left off (And as my least favorite Cub even before his extended absence, I'd be fine with).

So since the Cubs are in, some I've heard on sports talk radio have brought up an interesting question regarding the Cubs playoff roster that I'd like to get you all's take on...

If you're the Cubs, do you carry 3 catchers on the postseason roster? If so, whose the odd man out on the roster?

Yes, I assume they will. Odd man out is Hammel

I hope the Cubs don't sleep-walk through the rest of the season like they did against the Brewers this weekend. There is a danger in turning switches on and off.

They played the JV team for much of the weekend. They've got the starters back in tonight except for Coghlan in left. Considering they don't really have a regular left-fielder and Coghlan is OPSing over .800 over the last four or five weeks, that might just be playing the hot hand.

Also, they're switching back to the five man rotation now.

Cubs win, Nats lose.

Reds set a single season record with the most HR with 242. Russell, Contreras, and Heyward all adding to that list.

Magic number for home field down to 5.

I have 6. Do the Cubs hold a tie-breaker?

Regardless, I hadn't been paying attention to other teams over the weekend and was pleasantly surprised to see the Nats had gone through a mini-swoon. With 12 games to go, home field through the NLCS shouldn't be a worry.

Will be interesting to see which of the Giants and Cards can get the final wild card spot by default. We should all be preparing to see a DeGrom-less Mets team in the DS.

Cubs do hold the tie-breaker, so I went with 5. Perhaps I'm a bit impatient. :)

They only need to play .500 baseball the rest of the way to guarantee the best record in baseball. What a year.

By the way they're playing, it seems like neither the Giants or Cardinals want the last spot.

You're right on the tiebreaker. Cubs have the tiebreaker with the Dodgers, too.

So, magic number to host the NLDS is 1 and the magic number to host the NLCS is 3. Cubs could conceivably wrap it all up on Friday.

Meanwhile, the Mets lost to the Braves (again) and look like all the injuries might be catching up to them. The Cardinals are clubbing the Rockies. The Giants and Dodgers are scoreless early.

The Marlins have won 3 in a row. It would be hilarious if they could make a run at it. I'd love to see whomever ends up playing the Cubs have to win a couple one-game tiebreaker play ins.

No matter how unlikely, this is the best case scenario. :thumb:

With the Nationals' loss and Cubs' win yesterday, the magic number for home field throughout the NL is now 3.

Strop back on Friday.

Which makes everyone of consequence (except Schwarber, of course) healthy. Knock wood.

The Cubs have had their injuries, but have been very fortunate with the timing of their injuries.

It certainly helps to be a very deep organization that can dial back some players' playing time to avoid fatigue.

Sweep! Cubs match their 2015 win total of 97 tonight!

The end of season series against the Reds might be just what the bats need as a final tuneup for the playoffs. The offense just explodes against their [historically bad] pitching staff.

Home field magic number down to 2!

The Feldman and Clevenger for Arrieta and Strop deal has become legendary.

But I didn't realize until reading this excellent Jon Heyman article that the Orioles did a pretty darn good job of recouping their losses.

I had completely missed the fact that the acquired Mark Trumbo from the Mariners by trading them Steve Clevenger.

That's right. Steve Clevenger and his .608 career OPS has now been traded for the 2015 NL Cy Young award winner and the likely 2016 MLB home run leader. And while the Orioles at least got half a season of Feldman in addition to Clevenger for Arrieta, Clevenger was the only thing the Mariners got out of the deal.

Not to mention Clevenger being suspended by the Mariners without pay for his racist comments on Twitter. Good riddance.

Speaking of Strop, he's back! Activated off the DL today. Nice boost for the playoff bullpen. He'll certainly get the tune-ups he needs to be ready.

Final home series of the year starts today. Bring on the Cardinals (and hopefully set back their playoff aspirations).

Today's Arrieta is the Arrieta the Cubs need to see in October. 7 IP, 5 H, 1 BB, 10 K, 0 R.

Masterful.

I'm interested to see how Strop does in his return. Currently warming up in the bullpen. Cubs lead 5-0.

Strop looked as good as could be expected I think. Hopefully he gets 5-6 more good innings under his belt before the playoffs. :thumb:
