They both are small forwards, so it couldn't hurt our cause.

Given that IU is out of scholarships at this present moment, it appears that Creaning is alive and well. I still doubt this would dissuade Wilkes from picking IU.

I'm actually more surprised that J. Smith decides on these two schools as the finalists given the players already ahead of him on the rosters/recruiting classes. Obviously, ego plays a big part in the decision making, I know..

Hopefully, LA is a bridge too far. Pretty sure Wilkes isn't scared off by Smith, but how many SFs can Clappy take, especially with how few rides they have? IOW, if they take Smith, is that tantamount to throwing in the towel on Wilkes?

Sure. You can do better. But a guy who is a four year solid contributor and grows into one of the elite players in the conference is a higher total return than any one-and-done this side of Kevin Durant.
Sure, but Jackson wasn't a one and done. I was responding to your response to this:

Malcolm Hill was a 60-70 ranked recruit and not many of us would trade him for anyone that was ranked higher in his class.

Jackson was in the same class and I think it could be argued that he would have been more beneficial to the team, over the course of a few years, had he taken the place of Hill in that class (largely because of positional balance).

After a little digging, IU has one senior on the roster this year (Collin Hartman). They have four underclassmen who could declare early (James Blackmon, Jr., Thomas Bryant, De'Ron Davis, and OG Anunoby). I assume that Blackmon will stay (talented kid, but injury issues and lack of prototypical NBA size hold him back). Anunoby and Davis could go either way. I assume that Bryant will leave.

So far, IU has one 2017 commit: 3-star combo guard Al Durham. If they lose Bryant and Davis, they'll have no one notable at PF/C (besides I guess Juwan Morgan). If they take a commitment from Justin Smith, they'll have to bring it at least one more big. If Anunoby stays for his junior year, he'll most likely play the 3.

Maybe that's what Wilkes means about keeping it 100? If IU takes Smith, Anunoby stays, and Bryant and Davis leave, there's a huge glut at both wing positions and minimal talent up front. He might be seeing the writing on the wall with regard to ending up at PF for at least a year.

DeRon Davis is not leaving and you forgot 6'7" JUCO transfer SF Freddie McSwain. Anunoby and Bryant maybe to NBA.

Not sure what you mean about forgetting McSwain. He'd be part of the glut of wing talent at IU in 2017-18. You're probably right that Davis won't leave. I guess it comes down to whether Wilkes thinks he'd start at the 3 as a freshman alongside Anunoby (if he stays) and Davis, or whether he thinks he'd be stuck at the 4 with Anunoby at the 3. If Anunoby leaves, I'm sure Wilkes assumes he'd beat out Justin Smith (if he commits), McSwain, and Zach McRoberts.

I dunno. Thinking about it, it seems like a question of whether he wants a guaranteed spot on the wing at UI (replacing Hill) or wants to gamble that Anunoby leaves and/or slides to the 2 and the 4 in match-up based lineups, leaving plenty of time for Wilkes at the 3. If Anunoby stays another year, Wilkes very possibly ends up playing a lot of PF. I'm sure he sees that.

Of course, it's all irrelevant if he ends up at UCLA or XU. This is definitely a recruitment where I'm taking the field.

I am sure this is what he is talking about He just wants people to be honest. If you want me at PF just say that kind of thing I believe

Crean's not feeling comfortable about something or other.

Indiana's Tom Crean met with Brandon Randolph last night. Randolph had previously cut list to four. Appears the Hoosiers are back on it.

Does anyone know how this looks for UCLA, UConn, or Xavier?

I don't know positions, but going by size UCLA seems to have mostly 1/2s and 4/5s. I believe they're also the only Under Armour team on his list. Maybe this is why the crystal ball points to UCLA?

Crean is awfully busy for someone without shollys. I initially thought it would be tough to pull away Wilkes from IU. If IU does get Smith, I'm thinking Wilkes is looking elsewhere. Those comments I thought were pretty telling this late in the process.

I originally thought that the Scrugg's recruitment had a JCL feel to it but that didn't transpire, but now feel the Wilkes recruitment does. I'm on the side of Wilkes and not the field.:)

Shoe companies only make a difference in a handful of the very top tier recruitments annually according to something I read once from Brian Snow. He seems to think it's way over blown by message boards.

Either way, I don't think it's something we would have to worry about with Wilkes. Just from the outside looking in it appears his recruitment is on the up and up.

That Malcolm Hill spot is wide open next season. I think Groce has given Wilkes quite a bit to mull over.

Man, Wilkes and Kiir to close out the class, would be awfully good.

Give me Wilkes and Epperson

If we're talking impact college freshman then I'd put Michael Beasley in that discussion as he actually averaged more points and rebounds per game. I think what gets lost is his off court issues and not producing like a number two pick should.

He was really awesome in his year at K-State, but I'd still take Durant's Texas year. Anthony Davis is also obviously in this conversation.

Wilkes probably isn't scared of Smith & this could be an indication that IU doesn't think they are going to get Wilkes or that they just feel they need to hedge there bet...but with Crean, where you have already shown you will over sign & kick the leftovers to the curb by fall, I don't think you can read much into this. He would still take Wilkes & I doubt he is backing off, especially with OV coming.

Seconded. I wouldn't complain about any combination of Wilkes, Kigab, Epperson, and Kiir, though. Are we still in it with any other prospects? Any outside chance a name like Eastern or Victor Bailey re-emerges late in the process?

I think its pretty much just down to those 4 and hoping to get 2 of them, but what happens if Epps really likes his visit then kiir visits and wants to commit, then Wilkes says ok im in too I know the odds are about as slim as possible but what if ????

#824
I'm not saying he will for sure committ but trust me when I say, Wilkes really likes Illinois. Family loved the visit and coaches.

Watching 5-star SF Kris Wilkes open gym at North Central. Illinois John Groce plus assts from UCLA, SIU-Edwardsville and Milwaukee on hand

I found it strange that clappy wasn't at this. Maybe there has been a "falling out"
