That was a good scrimmage Kigab was in that day. They played against him tough and you know how Thorne and Black play.

And he matched up with Rice quite a bit. I was worried that Rice might be too physical with him that day, but the kid came back at Rice several times. Seems like a tough kid.

I don't know if this will have any effect on Wilkes or not.

2017 forward Cody Riley is expected to commit to UCLA, per a source. Here's more @FanRagSports:
That makes things a bit more interesting. According to 247Sports, Riley is 6'7" and classified a PF, #35 in the composite. UCLA already has Jalen Hill; 6'8" and classified a PF, #60 in the composite. I don't know their scholarship situation but this would be their fourth commit in the class.

Verbalcommits says they have 4 scholarships available and three committed. He would be the 4th, but we all know that coaches will oversign for top players!

I really don't think Kiir will come here. It seems he really wants a lot of minutes his freshman year (whether he is ready or not). Hope I'm wrong though, huge upside.

True but 3 recruits at 6'7"/6'8" that are all Top 50 would be interesting. That on top of two 6'9" recruits from '16 that are also Top 50 seems like a lot of length but no true centers.

A little bit of a different view, but currently, I believe Mayan Kiir is our most important recruit (from the ones with fairly realistic chances) position-wise. No doubt Wilkes is a home run at a different level, but it would probably sting a little more losing Kiir to VCU given expectations.

I generally agree, but fortunately it doesn't work this way...we should take both.;)

It really depends on who you get instead. A lot more risk at big, 3 bigs in 2017 isn't enough, in 2019 both Finke/Black are gone & Kiir would take a lot of pressure off 2019. But if we could land Epperson instead of Kiir then no harm/no foul.

Wilkes has the talent to step in and fill the void of Malcolm Hill, that would really help in 2017, but we have other good options. If we pull off an upset and Kigab were to go our way this afternoon, all the better.

Much more downside risk if we miss Kiir, probably a bit more upside if we pull off Wilkes.

I agree, that is why I added "given expectations." A lot can change in recruiting, but given current recruits and expectations, and future position gaps, IMO Kiir would hurt more. Wilkes is an absolute home run, Kigab a quality alternative to Wilkes, and indeed neither present a conflict with Kiir, but both lower probability of success. Epperson an alternative to Kiir, but currently not as high chances.

Trick question? Pickett. Current roster: Hill, maybe?

Leonard is correct. Played for team Ramey at its beginning prior to his junior year. Leonard skyrocketed up the rankings and committed to ui. Worked out ok for him, so let's hope pops steer Courtney to Champaign. Hill played for the jets prior to them and Ramey combining.

Watching Kigab's highlights, the kid does possess quite a bit of talent. Illini fans would be ecstatic to be in his top two if it weren't for the already highly touted class that Coach Groce has built. I honestly feel like we have no shot from reading his comments in different articles though. Wilkes makes me feel like we are right in the thick of things and I don't know which way it will go, but Kigab almost seems like the "lock" word we hate so much on message boards, but this time the lock is against us.

Wooten was originally committed to Nevada. He reclassified from 2016 to 2017, and has been released from his NLI.

We are in a great spot with all 3 recruits which shows you how well this staff is doing. It would not be the end of the world if we missed on all 3 and had 2 scholarships for next year with 2 in that class. <Finke among many others and or a 5th yr senior>

I agree 100%. I think once people find out what this team can do this year, and the results show on the court (which I am very confident they will) I think it makes it that much easier on Groce to reel in the big fish. To have assembled the class that he has with little on court success to back it up is pretty impressive. His personality plus some success on the floor I think will bode well for us in the future.

FWIW Wooten is a terrific athlete. Haven't looked into him too much and I'm guessing he's on the raw side but dude has some bounce

Agreed. He was a 2016 who reclassified to 2017. He is listed anywhere from 6'7" to 6'9". He can definitely jump and has long arms. There isn't any recent videos or articles about him, but he looks to be a more athletic version of Kiir but didn't display a jumper. Somebody might have to help me with these links.
