At this point, whether you blame Groce or not is more of an academic exercise. He needed a big hit with the 2017 class and this isn't it.
This much is true.

If you deduct Tilmon from the total, I still call it a solid class. But a C is the new PG when it comes to positional need. =/

I know these kids are 17 and 18, but my goodness, how can they have such little integrity? It's baffling to me, it really is.

This^^^^^ I guess $$ talks louder than integrity. My son is currently being recruited for baseball (D1) and I can assure you all that he will exhibit integrity (and less $$:D).

I don't know why people are surprised by this. The writing has been on the wall. Tonight isn't a "A HA" moment. The time to be alarmed was when he left LaLu. Not just leaving, but leaving against UI coaches wishes. LaLu was absolutely the best place for his long term future. Practicing against D1 talent day in and day out. The closest thing he would experience to a D1 college basketball experience to prepare him for his Freshman yr. The fact he left should tell you he had people in his ear that didn't have his best interest at heart. It should also tell you he is easily swayed.

This was a very strategic plan on the part of people in and around the SLU program. They got him closer to home, close to SLU campus, closer to people that can sway him.

In no way shape or form do I pretend to have any inside info whatsoever. But it doesn't take a genius to figure this out. UI has been in trouble here for some time and they knew it I believe. What is upsetting is we haven't heard about UI getting involved with more big men. Because the moment he left LaLu, this became a very strong possibility

Really?? Most top players dont come from well off families. They could all use a little, most of us for that matter, and when the opportunity to cash in arises, they take it. As would most people.

My heart really goes out to Groce. This is something else. I'm not so sure it's healthy for me to follow this stuff anymore :( Much love to the dedicated recruits who stand by their word.

When integrity is no longer a common and coveted virtue, society has failed and civilization will fall. I can't believe this. I'm done.

Why are people acting like it is over with Tilmon??? Why wouldn't an elite like this sign on his own day? Let's stop acting crazy please. Even if he doesn't come here it's not the end of the world. Our team in 17-18 without adding a Wilkes, plus JT was going to be a top 25ish type. 18-19 with JT, and an elite 18 would be a top 10 squad. We'll see. It could still work out that way. Playing in the B1G as a big man will prepare him for a pro future more than the A-10 without a doubt. He has the opportunity to be to our program what Thomas Bryant is to Indiana. LeBryan Nash was a heck of a player, but Ford failed to develop him into a legit wing despite Nash's physical gifts. Maybe, Ford is promising them that Evans is transferring to SLU to be their pg because Goodwin will play the 3 or 4 in the A-10.

Kind of like staying enrolled at Lalu as opposed to ESL?

I don't know if Lalu plays a schedule like a B1G/Power 5 slate or an A-10 schedule for what it's worth(sarcasm), but it would've done him better practicing against the Lalu players and competition as opposed to ESTL without a doubt. It doesn't bother me from a development perspective because he'll still get elite training in the metro east, and it makes our state high school teams that much stronger having him here. He'll get better and more experience in his two years of playing against B1G competition where the focus on basketball training is magnified by 1000 compared to h.s., prep, AAU ball. Have fun with the kids he grew up hooping with one last time before starting his pro journey. It's late, and we all have spent too much time on this tonight already.

hopefully it is just a hedge for a coach on a potential hot seat. This way if the season doesn't pan out and we get a new HC then he isn't locked in and begging for a release from his LOI.

This would make more sense, but the team is going to be pretty good this year. SFC will be rocking.

Then call your friends and pony up some cash to help Coach Groce out... That is the pathway that we will have to go to compete for these recruits in the future...REGARDLESS of who the coach happens to be at the time. :tsk:

I was a teen in 1967. This sucks, getting caught is a disaster. And we always seem to get caught. Be careful what you wish for.

No way do I want us to go down that path. Everyone who says it's a failure of Coach Groce, to not pony up the cash, is telling me that Groce needs to pay/cheat to win. Big talkers, but not worth the consequences... Can't blame Groce if this goes the wrong way.

Dear God please stay with the beloved. He seemed so ecstatic to commit earlier, I still feeel like he will be an Illini but this is really making me nervous. I imagine the Gordon commit to SLU changed something.

#247
Did something change just recently?

Because I follow Tilmon on Snapchat and ever since he committed he has always made sure to rep the Illini. Always pointing out his Illini gear when he has it on and he even talked a little trash to a kid with a Michigan shirt on once. Plus, he has been back on campus multiple weekends since committing. It truly looked like he was making sure everyone knows he is an Illini.

I'm eating a big bite of crow right now for calling this Tilmon rumor ignorant earlier today. This is sickening.
