QB Dwayne Lawson transferring to Illinois

Hoping I can provide a little insight for you all in regards to Lawson.

First things first, he's extremely talented. Big time arm, good runner, powerful, etc. He had way too much hype coming into Tech as a freshman. Many fans awarding him the Heisman already, you know the deal.

An insider on one of our boards said that the coaches believed they had a first round quarterback on their hands when he got on campus. That was until he actually had to learn the playbook. Basically, he just struggled so poorly with the mental side of the game that he just couldn't get it done.

I would have liked to see him stay at VT and switch positions to TE or WR like we had Bucky Hodges do, but he chose to move on because he was told by Fuente that he was going to redshirt his sophomore season (The previous staff played him in the second game of his freshman season to then only play him about 50 snaps all year, so he basically wasted a year).

I really hope that he turns it on for you guys, but I would just strongly advise you to temper expectations. He is one heck of a talent, there's no debating that. As a college QB though, he has a lot of work to do. I'm sure you can tell that from his JUCO numbers. Best of luck to you all and I hope you have some success with Lawson in the future.

I'll check back for a day or so if any of you have questions regarding him that I didn't talk about.

Thanks for insight. My question would be in regards to the difference in Beamer's Offense vs Fuente's and whether that played a role in learning offense. Or were both playbooks seemingly a challenge?

Isnt Chase going to be out for likely all of spring? Is that's the case, there won't be much competing going on other than in fall camp.

See post #53. Pretty much what I had heard. My son's roommate was a manager on the team his freshman year. Severely hoping it was just age and maturity thing and that McGee can coach him up. Tech had two good options with Evans and Motley - so they may not have worked it too hard.

That's a really good question. In the year he was on campus, we had Scot Loeffler as our OC, who was horrible. His offenses were known to be extremely complicated. That was pretty well known by people throughout the few years he was here.

That probably played a big factor in his lack of progression, but I don't think he made too much progress in Spring Ball once Fuente got here either since he was going to be asked to redshirt.

I haven't followed you all this season so I'm not sure what type of system Lovie has you guys running, but if it's quick reads and simple, then hopefully he has a chance to grasp it and be a playmaker. If not, move him ASAP and get him on the field cause he's an athlete.

I don't think Loeffler's offense was very complex (or good for that matter). Fuente brought in a much more complex O, but implemented in a very measured manner this year. Again, with Evans and Motley, they had two good options to focus on.

Well considering our options before Lawson transfers in, they couldn't get any lower lol!

Thanks again that helps and fingers crossed maybe he saw writing on wall with Evans coming in and didn't try as hard as he needed to learn offense.

At the end of the day there are worse things than running the ball 60% of the time with our surprisingly productive backs and a 6'6 235 QB who runs like a receiver

That's true too. He didn't transfer until August, so he very well could have seen that Evans is a stud and was going to start the next two years.

This is pretty exciting news. I'd be more excited if he was here for Spring Practice but Chayce can certainly be the starter until Lawson gets a grip on the offense.

Ball State to start off the season would be nice way to ease into a season but WKU USF are solid teams, Lawson will probably be QB and will have two tests early in the year

The excitement here seems a little overblown for a guy who was a backup last year in JC and only threw 41 passes.

The tools are there. Just hope that Illini coaches can coach him up and get something out of him. He has the skills that a Magee needs to run his offense. I think that's where the excitement comes from. He has the best skill set of all the QB's on the roster.

He transferred in August...

This and originally planned to go to Hutchison CC further delaying his arrival.

Lawson was the starter on arrival until he violated team rules, which is probably the bigger concern than his ability. It appears we have landed a supremely talented QB who may have a tendency to be his own worst enemy. We have to hope that he has matured and has the best possible head coach to help him fulfill his potential.

His ability is not in question

The excitement is justified, IMO. Look at the QB depth chart before you insert Lawson. Terrifying.

Chase Crouch was not a winning B1G QB when he was playing last fall. and the injury leaves him unable to get markedly better in the offseason. Now you have an athlete that has all the tools your stud OC asks for, and Crouch can move into the Riley O'Toole role. Very big deal.
