Well then, here we are again. So, what's the earliest we hire a new coach? What's the latest?

Since a search committee is being retained (hired). IIMO the hiring is not as close as some here would have us believe.

The idea that Keatts is a John Groce hire is just wrong. John Groce took a mediocre Ohio program and kept it mediocre capping it off with a "fluke" hot run to the sweet 16. Keatts took a nothing program and turned it into a great one. Not okay...great. Keatts record is sterling. And barring a Lovie-esque hire (which was Monty), we would be lucky to get someone the caliber and buzz of Keatts.

In fact, we should start getting used to the idea...

Agreed. While not my #1 choice, he'd be a good hire

Can he go 2 for 2? S&C is salivating right now.

It's a prep school, but the turnover is probably similar.

Wikipedia describes them as grade seven through "post graduate", whatever that means. Their current basketball roster has 22 players on it, so maybe ten D-I seniors every year is within the realm of the possible. I was thinking a team could have no more than thirteen players, but that is just a college scholarship number, isn't it?

Doubt it, but we'll see in a little over an hour.

Dayton has been sliding, plus Miller wants a P5 school to coach - I believe preferably in the B1G....I think he/family is too smart to take NC State...that will always be a tough gig. Valvano took that school has high as it will ever go imo.

Keatts is on upswing, hot name, ties to the tobacco area...if anyone had tangibles to create something at NC State to rival the blue bloods, seems he would take this in a heartbeat....makes more sense.

Martin seems like most likely for Mizzou, but could see Crean there even with the denials of interest..

My guess on way things work out...

Miller-Illinois
Keatts-NC State
Martin-Mizzou
Crean-Cal
Marshall-Indiana
Kelsey-Wichita St

Hargrave has both varsity and post-graduate basketball teams so that gives roughly double the amount of spots as most high schools.

Did he coach both teams? And just who does a "post-graduate" (but still not college) team play against?

I am coming around to accepting that Keatts may have really had ten D-I players every year, but it still seems like a very strange basketball world to me.

As long as someone else does the signing for him...I cannot imagine his signature with that pen grip...disturbing. (JK)

You can't be serious. He was circling a stat... I've even grabbed a pen like that. *My Sarcasm meter is off, BTW*

NVM saw the parenthetical joke too late... sorry

There is an obvious reason for the timing of the announcement...not obvious to us....but to get the jump like this I'm thinking there's somebody in the oven. Maybe not done...but it's baking at 450 degrees.

That is the logical conclusion. But it's difficult to imagine who that might be if it's not Monty. Who else would be available, but not involved in postseason prep?

Not sure what it was when Keatts was there but the head coach of the post-graduate team is also called the "program director" and the coach of the varsity team is an assistant on the post-grad team. There's a lot more to this than your typical high school program.

I would be ok with Keatts as our next HC, but I don't think he deserves the same amount of money as it sounds like we are/were willing to offer Monty or a great college coach. Just doesn't have quite enough high level experience to me. If that's who we go with, save some of the money to extend him if the first 2-3 years go well.

Until ILNative announces that it's not Monty....I will remain unconvinced.:D

Just because the Monty news came out today doesn't mean it happened today. This conversation could be a week old and now is coming up since Groce officially fired.

Agreed. But that is irrelevant to the assertion that the firing was announced today because there is a hiring coming soon.

Bennett and Miller would be homeruns, to me. Keatts would have me excited, but not as much as the aforementioned.

If Monty was offered big money to come here, you'd think that paying Bennett that money and having him come here wouldn't be that far of a stretch.

That was where my thoughts went immediately upon hearing that we're willing to go to the top dollar.
