Meh, wording worked out pretty good for UI, I'd say!

"Illinois WAS PREPARED to make Monty a top ten paid coach," right? (Or something like that?) Sends a message.

Yeah, sends a message that we dimmed our sights and settled for whoever we eventually get, leading to backbiting and recriminations.

We're not going to spend $4 million on a coach because we're not going to land a $4 million coach, gang.

The expectations are out of control.

By his theory, they wouldn't need to - they'd just need to register with people in NBA circles.

Which it would.

Meh, I highly doubt NBA teams have shown any emotion on these tweets.

I have no idea how Monty feels about his personal family situation, but I do not believe NBA teams will be influenced by a college team like Illinois that has not been in the limelight (to say the least) for the last 12 years. Monty will likely return to NBA coaching on his own merits, but I do not think this offer (or just news) have had any impact. JMO.

I like Monty though, I would have welcome him at Illinois. Good guy, great reputation in basketball (e.g., AAU) circles.

I like it he would be my #2 guy after Marshall but I'd take him right now he is an excellent coach and he would have us in the top 4 B1G almost every year. Not sure about his recruiting ability but this guy can flat out coach players.

Archie Miller and Gregg Marshall have totally different recruiting reputation, as viewed from coaches (HS/AAU). Archie is actually very well connected with some influential people with connections to HS, AAU, but also NBA. There is a reason why the Greek Freak's brother ended up at Dayton (partial qualifier this year). The Miller brothers are very visible on the recruiting scene.

Well, since you know that to be true, I'll just stop following the thread. I can just bookmark this page, click on your recent posts and get all the gospel I need a few days from now. :thumb:

I'm not really excited about Greg Marshall. not to say he's not a good coach, but he's used prior interest to parlay 3.3 mil. form Wichita St. over the last few years. he's take 3 star and juco talent to extremely high levels at a school that hasn't really attracted the 4 and 5 star kid. I wonder if he can get the higher ranked kid with the Illinois resources? if he's our choice I hope its a quick sell form Whitman and either he's in or he's out and move on. but maybe that's my high school rejection impulse from high school rearing its ugly head again!

If it does ultimately end up being Archie Miller, how cool would it be to have a rematch of the 2005 Elite Eight down the road with the Miller brothers as opposing coaches? Would make for a hell of a storyline.

Wouldn't surprise me. That was such a cratering down the stretch by them it made it a next-to-impossible sell if you're Josh Whitman.

Sounds like the new guy is going to be able to take Illinois Basketball to infinity and beyond.

I'm just sayin'.

Whitman is not a magician. If you can't see Archie and Marshall being Shaka and Stevens redux from a million miles away here, you're crazy.

Gregg Marshall would be an absolute grand slam hire. That guy is a star and Illinois would compete for titles under him.

I may be in the minority but I would be thrilled with that. He's a helluva coach.

Looking at his recruiting classes as VT, I'm underwhelmed. If he could get the right assistants to be recruiting specialists* and then provide solid coaching to get the most out of them at Illinois, well, I'd be happy as a clam.

*Jamall Walker, perhaps?

Marshall parlaying interest into a huge raise shows that he is smart. I have no issue with that.

At mid-major, you will not get 5* other than total exceptions here and there. But the level of talent that schools like Wichita State, Butler, VCU, Gonzaga, Xavier, etc. get is higher than schools in their conference. They have become a very viable alternative to mid-level high-majors in P5. I can go to Illinois (at current stage) or I can go to one of these schools and be in the NCAA pretty much my entire career. It is a strong value proposition.

If you look at a common aspect on these programs, they have built their reputation through many coaches over the years, not just one.

Personally, I think Marshall will have problems recruiting at a P5 rebuilding situation like Illinois, so I think he will look for a more stable situation, or a school with a stronger brand name that can give him a recruiting boost.

People would be anti-Buzz? That's crazy talk.

I have a hard time seeing it happen though.

I feel like I got a lukewarm reception when I brought him up in the Carousel thread? Maybe I'm not remembering right.

I think he would just kill it here.
