I think too much is made of assistant coaches. I recall all of us getting totally wrapped up in Jerrance Howard and Tracy Webster back in the Weber era, and what came of that? If you have a head coach who can recruit, you don't need to depend on your assistants to do it. If you need to depend on your assistants to get good recruits, you hired the wrong head coach. As for Tillmon, that's a short-term issue.

I disagree. Calipari, Pitino, K, Roy probably don't need recruiting assistants, but pretty much every other school does. The head coach can't do it all. Jerrance has always provided his head coaches with talent. What they do with it is different story.

Tilmon is a big piece in helping the new coach have early success to get a nervous fanbase on board. New coach loses Tilmon and then loses a lot early? May lose the fans quick

If we are considering Drew should also be considering Jacobson and other way more soccessful mid major coaches not a ver inspiring hire imo I think Keatts would be a more dynamic hire and better recruiter

In a lifetime of various awards, promotions, etc --- somehow I've never felt more validated. Thank you Mr Coldagelli, that gif is hilarious.

The MAC is a bad basketball conference. This isn't football.

Average conference rank when Bryce Drew was at Valpo:13.4

Average conference rank when Groce was at Ohio: 17

This isn't the football board, I wondered why we were replacing Lovie so soon... Probably could have taken a little more time to look at it before posting, but the Horizon isn't what it once was. I took a quick look at the Kenpom team rankings and felt like I saw more MAC teams in the top 100 than Horizon League over the last few years.

And John Groce beat Northwestern 2 times, and add Michigan and Michigan State among other tournament teams. He competed with Wisconsin. I don't know what you want him to do?

You missed the part about Drew beating up his conference at his previous job.

John Groce went 37-53 in the Big Ten. C'mon man.

John Groce was a head coach for 9 years. He has 2 winning conference records. This isn't as hard as they are making it is it?

79-83 all time record in conference games.

Bryce Drew is 75-27. Bryce Drew has coached in 1 season at a P5 school and has 1 more winning conference record at a P5 school than John Groce.

The discussion on Kendall Gill's mentioning of Sam Mitchell's interest in the job was fairly brief. Why is this board so opposed to Mitchell?

Are we really that scared about losing recruiting battles in East St. Louis?

Oh, c'mon. You think having Cuonzo at Mizzou and Travis Ford at SLU will be confined to recruiting East St. Louis? We have already lost Goodwin and Carte'Are Gordon to Ford. You think they will not compete with Illinois in recruiting in other areas, including our own State and Chicago? Heck, Cuonzo pulled Charlie Moore from Chicago to CA.

Their hiring has increased recruiting intensity, and we sure need to counter with a dynamic recruiter. Am I concerned that we may lose recruits to them IF we do not get a coach who is an excellent recruiter? Of course I am, yet I am not losing sleep until we actually hear who our coach will be.

But if both are mediocre coaches, how long will each coach last? I've never understood how players continue to commit to these coaches after it is well established that they are not the greatest at actually winning games. I understand charisma and all that other stuff, but I feel today's era of greater exposure should result in more educated decisions. Get a coach who can win here and in a few years we probably won't have to worry about Martin and/or Ford.

Jankovich is a great coach. But I can't imagine why he would want to start a new coaching life when he is pushing 60 and SMU is on a roll.

My thing is, Mizzou hiring Martin changes nothing for Illinois. Regardless of who Mizzou hired, we were going to need to land a dynamic recruiter to achieve sustained success. Recruiting intensity has always been very high; Martin and Ford don't change that. If Martin and Ford aren't competing with Illinois for recruits in the area, at least 10 other coaches will be.

Not necessarily. See Kim Anderson

We hire Cuonzo, I think Mizzou and everyone else is behind us in St. Louis area

He didn't "beat up" on the MVC when he was there.

Nope. But I was being generous because S&C seems to highly regard him. And S&C is kind of the unofficial king of this thread.
