I'm sure this opinion will surprise absolutely no one, but Kentucky is hanging around, not us.

MSU/Kentucky's roster uncertainty is what's really hanging around. But it's kind of like said uncertainty drove us, so we can't leave until it does.

Oh and another thing. I have no idea if we get him, but that stuff you said about Tilmon being our lead recruiter with Smith... I call it baloney.

...

BTW, the high school state marching band championship is held where? Not in Evanston. Not in Peoria. They're held in Memorial Stadium, and it's worth a lot of goodwill for the university. Every kid who marched there, every parent who attended, has been on campus and is more likely to support the school financially (via tax dollars) and otherwise.

...
Nope. The competition held at ISU is considered to be the state championship.

Smith is going to MSU. Let's not kid ourselves.

Has Smith even met Underwood?

I will wait until I see evidence that we're even on the list anymore after Groce and especially Tilmon's departure before taking any particular interest in this.

Yeah, but it would be just sad and a sign of what a dark, awful world we live in if some new coach who has never met the kid was able to waltz into the recruitment at the last second and steal the kid from his earlier suitors, right guys? ;)

He's had at least 1 in-home, including one last week. I believe there was one earlier but can't remember. We need another one to occur after his school visits. I doubt he comes back to Champaign for a visit, he already knows the campus and facilities, but getting in front of him again will be key.

I am not waiting for this kid. And may not support him even if he decides on UI.

Bye, bye kid. All the best.
Well, I guess it's good for us then that you don't factor into the decision making process... :tsk:

Of all the ridiculous posts I have seen on this board, and the recruiting thread in particular, this one is pretty high on the list. Quite possibly top 5.

At this stage in the recruiting game, what else are you going to wait for?

Seems like a silly statement all the way around.

I understand your part about not waiting for him if someone else pops up who is good, but why wouldn't you support him if he chooses Illinois? He has done nothing wrong in this recruitment.

Why in the world would you not support Mark Smith if he commits to Illinois? It's not like he's pulled a Tilmon and jerked our chain around. He hasn't said anything disparaging about Illinois. I know of no legal issues.

There is zero reason to not support him if he commits to us.

We still have a shot at landing Mark Smith. Obviously there is a long way to go but we are still hanging in there. Tilmon sat by him at one game, big deal. Smith has been up at Champaign when Tilmon wasn't there. Those two probably didn't know each other until December. He saw OSU and Minnesota play. He is a game changer type recruit. After watching both play multiple times Smith is the recruit we need to land. There is a reason he got the Mr. Basketball award and Tilmon finished fourth.

Hey guys idk if this is the place to put this or not. I've been an Illini fan since I was 9 years old (2003). I've followed recruiting pretty closely since the whole D-Jax debacle. Other than Eric Gordon, are there any other big recruiting disasters that have happened to Illinois?

Where to begin . . .

Other than the ones already mentioned, check out Quentin Snider. He was an Illini commit who didn't send in his NLI, choosing instead to secretly send one to Louisville.

Ben Wilson was the saddest story of them all.

And, in between those two events, we've had enough nut punches to last a lifetime.

It sounds like Smith is going to go to Kentucky this weekend for his last visit.

Dude, that's not even parody-tier. We should straight up just do it.

No I know, I'm not kidding. I like Hardy a lot, he clearly has a desire to play for Underwood (and against Michigan and MSU) and he's busy looking elsewhere while we're Lloyd Dobler-ing with Smith. I would like to not Groce-ify this situation, please.

I like to think he's waiting to see what Bridges does. If Bridges stays and Jemarl Baker announces for Kentucky on Wednesday, I think our chances go up. Maybe not to very good, but at least 50/50.

Hard to tease out the logic here, but if this is saying that UI is in 3rd and the only way we back into him is because of logjams at UK and MSU, that doesn't seem right. If he believes they will be better / more visible than UI next year, with more entrenched coaching (2 hall of famers) he would have picked one of them already. He has offers to both allegedly. It's not like he's waiting to see what happens because he only gets an offer if space frees up. He's not a one and done, so even if it looks 'promising' for his freshman year, he'd have to believe MSU and UK are both targeting 5 stars at that position in 2018, 2019 etc.

On the other hand, he clearly has a BIG offer for UI where he would be featured, play a national schedule, get all the playing time he can handle and the resulting exposure. If the kid thinks he's going to the League and MSU and UK are the best places to do that, why would he wait? You have an offer, go ahead and take one.

Maybe orange colored glasses, but it seems more likely to me that UI remains in the running and he's waiting to see if there will be anyone over 6'6 on the team other than Finke to play with him. However, it could be like a poster yesterday implied that he has 'verballed' to somebody and wants his 'hat ceremony'. If that's the case, I don't understand why he's debating visiting UK or OSU this week. Seems odd to me and at least in his public persona, he doesn't seem like the 'hat ceremony' type. We shall see shortly I suppose.

A kid who grew up and Illini fan, is not choosing Mizz IMO. Unless there i$ more involved. But the Smith family allegedly doesn't play those games.

I grew up in the metro east (town over from Edwardsville) a die hard Illinois fan and decided half way through high school that I wanted to go to Mizzou so yeah. It's very possible.
