No I know, I'm not kidding. I like Hardy a lot, he clearly has a desire to play for Underwood (and against Michigan and MSU) and he's busy looking elsewhere while we're Lloyd Dobler-ing with Smith. I would like to not Groce-ify this situation, please.

Playing for Spite eh? I know a guy who tried to return a sport coat out of Spite one time. It didn't work out too well.

The difference now is we have 2 PG's and a combo guard. I'm completely fine with waiting on Smith before going all out for Hardy.

I'm fine with waiting on Smith, but unfortunately I don't see Hardy happening if they feel good about Ayo.

Tigerboard is a bit restive about Tilmon's LOI release. Some chatter there that some of this has to do with mom dragging her feet on paperwork. Totally aside from the basketball aspect of this, it's heartbreaking to see what appears to be a genuinely tough family situation. =/

Seriously? Kid gets a free ride, top flight education if he wants it, and a sure ticket to the next level at which point the family gets taken care of. No matter where they decide he goes.

That could be true too. And I think that's ok because like I said...we aren't short on PG's right now. Hardy just seems to have too many holes in his game for how short he is.

Never know how kids will progress though. We have a ton of open scholarships now, and if Underwood thinks he's worth a ride, then the number of bodies we have ahead of him shouldn't matter much.

We have four open; rides, its not like we're deciding between Hardy and a similarly ranked big man.

Saw that Izzo was present at some of Hardy's games. So he obviously had his reasons for not pursuing him. Saw holes in his game that have been noted on here as well. Like his attitude and has potential with his motor but defenses will exploit his weaknesses easily at the next level.

Moore is flat out a project.

Only thing Moore has that we need as of now is height, agreed he is a project to say the least. As of now however, BIGS might be hard to come by..

Class I would take as of now if we get lucky

Frazier
Williams
Smith/Hardy either since Smith seems in a distance now?
Kiir
Badocchi

For my 4th and final scholly...why not get Olivier Sarr?

that's the point though. just making this decision appears to be tearing them apart.

Wayne County, IL
As a native Peorian that truly believes in the potential of Peoria and all of the Warehouse District improvements, I have to be honest: I want that tournament to stay in Peoria, even as an Illini fan; I'm not sure the advantage to U of I of having it in Champaign is that great, anyway.

EDIT: Off topic, but last I heard the baseball state tournament was in Joliet ... WHY?! Peoria is much more central and has a very nice minor league field right by the new stuff in the Warehouse District. Joliet is a HELL of a drive for someone in Southern Illinois.
I am from South Eastern part of the state, not from the far Southern tip, but I always felt it was a disadvantage for any team or individual south of I-70 to compete at the state tournament or meets. When Cross County was still one class and the first year it was two classes we traveled to Detweiller Park in Peoria to compete in the state meet. It was a long drive, so we stayed over night both times, but the travel didn't allow us to practice. Just like Peoria was Holy Ground for a Cross County Runner likewise so is (or maybe it was in my era) Champaign to a Basketball player. Anytime you can get kids to your university to play on your court it doesn't hurt.

Tilmon? Incorrect.

He's got a chance, but far, far, far from a sure ticket.

Maybe a 40% chance he appears in an NBA game, and a 10% chance he has a sustained career. That's probably generous.

Each player is different, but Tilmon's future going forward may be somewhat similar to Deon's and even with his illustrious 4 years as an Illini, his career with Dallas was short (mimi camp only) and for naught by his choice. He did much better overseas and this is where he found his niche for several years.

That's way too low. Tilmon has elite size so barring him being a total dud, which isn't likely I would put sustained career at about 40% and playing in one game 75%.

NBA will always take a chance on size. Archibald and Scott Meents played in more than 1 game

Tilmon has 3 inches on Deon which is alot for post players. Deon was a fantastic post player with extremely long arms, but he was 6'7.5" at predraft camp

I think those numbers are generous.

And 6'10'' is not elite NBA size. Especially one that A. isn't a natural shooter and B. isn't an explosive athlete

He's over 6'10 and 260 lbs. Ever NBA team has bigs on the end of their bench and 1 game isn't a tough threshold to meet for a guy his size who isn't a bad shooter or bad athlete. I'd say above average on each for a guy his size

If Tilmon plays at Illinois he will be a lottery pick.
If Tilmon plays at Miznoz he will live in a van down by the river. In Pittsburgh.

The NBA has fewer and fewer players like Tilmon, they don't favor size like they used to.

But that's beside the point. The number of players out of every class who have real careers is super limited. Maybe like 20, depending on the class, and that includes foreigners.

The cup of coffee thing is trickier, I'm not going to fight you on that one (though 75% is clearly high. Top 10 recruits are only about that high.)

The point is, the Tilmon family is a long way and pretty long odds from truly life-changing money. No one would sell them a million dollar insurance policy at this point, that's for sure.

Yep. The ghost of Cliffmas past can tell you all about NBA odds.

This topic runs the risk of becoming pointless, because I'd argue he's an average athlete with below average ability to stretch the floor with his jump shot - a skill that's becoming objectively must-have at his position in today's NBA. His pros are his hands and footwork on the low block, with some ability to protect to rim. He'd be hugely impactful for a NCAA team with a gaping hole at that role - no sour grapes.

Also, I don't see anybody listing him remotely close to 260.

If you've got the time, see how many 4 star, around-the-rim bigs are retaining NBA roster spots in 2017. It's a diminishing number. Hell, the Sixers are realizing now that Okafor has no utility in today's game, but nobody wanted any part of that at the deadline.

More like 92% for top 10.

No I don't think Tilmon is an absolute lock, but with any sort of improvement in college and barring a series on injuries I think there is very strong chance he at least gets cup of coffee
