Loren Tate met Smith as he arrived on campus. Gave him him a signed Bruce Weber picture and his lucky Illini underwear. Smith's were like, nah, we out.

Wait why did Loren Tate have Bruce Weber's underwear?

Not saying something is a lock, but in general it is sad that kids literally ditch their state and local community to go somewhere random.

I mean unless he grew up a Michigan State fan?

But doesn't he visit Ohio State Friday and/or Saturday? Can't see him committing until after that visit. Probably take the weekend to think about it all with his family.

From what I am hearing, Smith could turn this into his final OV, and a commitment would be most likely tomorrow.

This would be ideal, but seems unlikely. The kid has been very professional about this process.

EDIT: not to say it'd be unprofessional to do this, but he just seems like the kind of person to stick to his plans.

I think so too, I like how Smith has handled his recruitment no matter where he ends up. He does not lead/mislead, and much of the speculation about favorites/commitments etc. comes from people/fans close to particular schools (e.g., MSU, Kentucky, Illlinois, tOSU, etc.) rather than his own actions or statements.

I like the way you think!!!
Underwood will try to get a commitment today. And maybe he fails to do so. But I like the idea of applying pressure in this sense.

Smith's keeping his options open and Underwood should be able to do the same.

Sometimes you figure out a person's true intentions when you hold their feet to the fire. Or at least figure out how genuine their interest is.

It's a move to set up Underwood's next move, if that makes sense.

Who would blame Smith for soaking up all the attention? Most major recruits do it.

Smith has done nothing to seek attention. Schools and fan bases, including Illinois, give him attention because he established has himself as a top player, with his actual play, not rankings. Smith has done nothing IMO to seek or soak attention.

Self was recruiting all over the country successfully. BU can do it too with OA. Self didn't rely on Chicago, he got studs from downstate just as much as Chicago kids. Yes there is great talent up there every year but saying we won't be successful without kissing their !!! is getting old. Get off your high horse Chitown. You aren't the only place in America that produces good basketball players.

Saw that. If anything, given this guy's record, I'd actually feel more comfortable if he gave an MSU CB. =P

Perhaps he is trying the reverse psychology angle and picking Illinois in hopes that he's wrong and MS ends up at MSU...

I totally agree with this. No IG or Twitter posts trying to mislead or get fan bases riled up. No outlandish "look at me" actions. Just seems to be a kid trying to decide the best place for him and his future.

While I hope so much it is in the O&B, I hope he does well wherever he lands. No reason to wish ill will on anyone for doing what they believe it is best for them and doing it in what seemingly looks to be the right way.

... unfortunately, with a not so good prediction record even on MSU recruits :(

Not sure I'm following. Looking at all the "expert" accuracy percentages, Scherer's is higher than almost everyone else at 77.75%. Am I missing something?

Hearing Duke and Kentucky are out, which isnt a surprise based off whats been tossed around here lately.

MSU, Illinois, and OSU.

DeAngelo Russell has been in frequent contact with Mark here recently pushing OSU.

Also heard people in Smith's family are perplexed as to why Mark loves illinois so much but he does. Hopefully the visit goes well today

Same holds true for fans like us. Difference between the heart and the brain lol and the heart seldom loses!

Well he has a lot of time to recruit for OSU after the Lakers went 26-56 this season. At least our guys play in the postseason
