i don't think going to OSU, if he does, means anything. The Smiths have been very thorough in this process. They had a plan and they are following it. I still think Illinois is in the lead they just have to survive one last challenge. Things could change but I think they are looking good at the moment.

Exactly, when you get a chance to visit one of the famous college football stadiums, you do it. Visiting different college towns has always been one of my favorite things to do. Its about life experiences sometimes. I always encourage players to take all visits, even if interest is very small.

If my kids get the chance to be recruited by colleges, you bet your bottom dollar I'm encouraging/demanding my kids to visit as many schools as possible before making a decision.

And that is taking into account how much I love Illinois. I love my kids more and want them to be happy

Let's not kid ourselves. He's not going to get the experience of visiting Columbus for the hell of it. It's because he wants to hear their pitch.

Now it's a matter of whether Underwood's pitch is the best he's heard. I can't say it is, but I do believe Underwood is capable of putting us in a better position than our former staff. We just have to see how it plays out.

Dad's plan was also to visit Kentucky so Mark could scrimmage with Fox and Monk so don't be too surprised if that happens too. We have no idea who is in the lead and neither does anybody else obviously.

As this all plays out, Smith's have stuck to all they say they are doing. Refreshing to see a young man with his parents, going through with all commits they make. Have to admire that. Something we might get see in future, good character. And still not one comment from them. Keeping there business to themselves.

It's a good rule of thumb that if you're ascribing any motive to a visit other than "he's interested in going there," you're probably going to end up pretty disappointed.

There's interest and then there's INTEREST.

If I were an Ohio State fan I would regard the idea of Smith committing there as totally ludicrous and a waste of time.

Every time we don't receive immediate affirmation, we react in a negative manner (twitter, forums, etc).

Let's change our approach and support Mark and his family through the process.

1. Even if it's a small chance, you never know if they'll somehow just knock the socks off him. Could happen at any on campus visit to any recruit. Not saying it's likely, but if he's willing to come for an on campus visit, it's worth Ohio State's time to host him and see what might happen.

2. Even if there's essentially zero chance of him committing to Ohio State, might still be worth his while to go, just for purposes of comparison and seeing what's out there. (1) to satisfy himself that he's not missing anything as he's looking; and (2) because maybe he'll see things there that will raise questions for him about other schools that he's more seriously considering.

all in all, i agree that there's interest and INTEREST - but even if there's very limited interest, could be worth his while to go, see what he sees on the off chance that they blow him away and on the less off chance that he picks up on something in his visit that's useful to him in thinking about his options

This isn't junior prom where the girl turned you down and you pout. It's a multi-million dollar business where acquiring talent is everything. If Tilmon comes back and says he thought it over and he wants to play at Illinois - you take that commitment and smile. I guarantee you the staff has been nothing but professional with Tilmon and his family

So when your job is on the line and you only have so much time to take a team that is insanely limited in its current state you would pass on a top player at the position we are thinnest at out of spite?
Am I going crazy here or would that be the worst job decision BU could make?

Im shocked I even have to have this discussion. This job is about winning...everyone will forget Tilmon ever decommitted if he commits and we start winning games.

Huh? Why would we do that? Support a kid and his family who's seems to have done nothing but act in an honest and fair manner? What's the fun on that?

My take on Smith visiting OSU is actually a good one - IMHO he wanted to commit to Illinois and his parents sais cool your jets, take your last visit and if you still feel the same then fine

Obviously he will listen to the pitch. I'm just saying even if he was leaning towards Illinois, why not take the visit. I've always told kids when you think you have decided on a school, take one more visit.

But that's what we do as Illinois fans.....we ride the waves of emotion.

I for one am with you. Let's act like winners who don't hold on to every last rumor or crystal ball.

I hope smith comes here after making a very informed decision.

Fair enough, and it's the same advice I give my students. It just seems like some of us here are trying to convince themselves that OSU doesn't pose a threat. I like our chances, but it ain't over till it's over, you know?

When people in this thread advise others not to draw rash conclusions, not to ride the crazy recruiting roller coaster, to take things with grains of salt, to assume things are never over till they're over, the response is often: well, you don't have to follow this thread if you don't want to. Here's the problem (and maybe I'm speaking for myself): I want to follow this thread. I want to have a reasonable flow of information about the players we're recruiting, who we're likely to get etc. I am not interested at all in unsubstantiated crap or jumping to conclusions about how things are a lock. The many people who post conclusory and unsupported pieces of "info", the many people who take such info and run with it, etc. destroy this thread for those of us interested in a reasonable discussion of recruiting. Recruiting discussion doesn't have to equal histrionics and insanity, and when people engage in that, it makes the discussion frustrating and dumbs it down for the rest of us. My two cents.

I agree. It is possible he falls in love with OSU. I believe we are the clear leader but that all could change with an all time great sell job by Matta.
