I am not an S&C backer, but you are just going by what 1 guys thinks, to try to disprove what another thinks

Not really. There's a lot of data supporting the idea that smith is better than 75, and a lot of reason to think that national recruiting sites that focus on AAU and not HS ball wouldn't be keyed in. As far as media goes, Henricksen is *the* authority of Illinois HS ball and his opinion just corroborates what Kentucky Duke et al seem to think about Smith

That UVA campus in Charlottesville is one of the most beautiful I've ever visited, but I hope FB likes up tempo basketball better than rolling hills and trees!:illinois:

My pet peeve is "I've got". "I've got to do this..." You mean, you have to do that?

The actual line from the Wizard of Oz is "I've a feeling we're not in Kansas anymore." People contract things, and then add unnecessary words because the contraction seems too short....

The one that really grinds my gears is "I could care less" instead of "I couldn't care less."

Everyone's digesting the Mitch Trubisky draft pick.

Here's exclusive footage of Bears fans reactions as the pick was announced...

I completely agree with you that Smith is underrated even at 75. Having watched both Smith and Tilmon play, Smith makes a much bigger impact on the game. Some of that is because he plays PG, but I also think Tilmon just does not have as big of an impact on the game as he could ie DJW.

The 30-50 range seems more than fair for Smith imo

ok try to look at star rating like the NCAA. a group of people pick who they think the top 100 teams are before they ever play a game. well people who start off in the top 5 are hard to get out of the top 20 unless they really suck. then a team like WSU can be just as good as any in the top 20 and never get there cause they start so low.

I agree completely with that sentiment. The Groce apologists used to say constantly,"but we finished second and at least we were in the running". That meant zilch to me because as Ricky Bobby's Daddy said, "Son if ya ain't first your'e last".

In at least one of the articles that came out after Smith committed, it was mentioned that scouts recently evaluated him and said he was a blue chip top 5 pg in the class. I don't remember which article that was or who posted it. Might've been in more than one. I think it mentioned that it's just too late in the rankings game to get his ranking up to where it should be. It all just happened too late.

I could care less where he would of been ranked. I've got a feeling he's gonna play good for us.

Agree. UVA was my second choice behind UofI 32 years ago. Let's hope Frankie Jones feels the same way.

This is a false premise.

Also, the hilarious thing about this whole argument: Mark Smith played AAU ball last summer and Jeremiah Tilmon didn't.

I like Mark Smith a lot, and I'm not going to get dragged into an "is he #46 or #78?" discussion when there's hardly any difference between those anyway.

This is wise.

Fact of the matter is that he's going to come in and be just as, if not more (and sooner), impactful than TJL was this season.

I agree with you that who cares because rankings don't have a super high correlation with ultimate performance, but aside from that pretty much completely disagree. And I want to engage on this out of boredom. All informed opinions that I've heard suggest that rankings are heavily based on AAU. Smith was at the very beginning of his basketball ascent during AAU last summer. Meanwhile Tilmon played AAU years before that and was already very high in the rankings (and inertia tends to exist). The ultimate import of the ranking is basically nil - Deron was 50 or so and was the #3 pick in the NBA draft three years later, meanwhile Cliff sucks. But they do matter for program visibility short term - and more importantly for this board at the moment, people tend to rely on them to inform future expectations in the absence of any more reliable data.
