Interesting situation with Tim Finke. It might make sense for him to grab the Illinois offer right now take the pressure off.

On the other hand DJ Williams did a disappearing act his senior year in HS. Should have set off alarm bells.

Evaluating talent is a big part of college coaching success. JMO this was a weak spot for BAM and JG. It eventually cost them their jobs.

I still will never understand the bolded. This absolutely isn't true for Groce. Groce was fine at evaluating talent, its just that he couldn't close on most of it.

Another top recruit who is having a brutal Peach Jam is Cart'Are Gordon (as I watch Team Penny fall behind Albany City Rocks 52-19). Think he's averaging about 5 points a game and he hasn't done much of anything so far in this game -- granted the wheels have come completely off for Penny. Even playing on the same team as James Wiseman and one of the Lawson kids, who are taking most of the shots, you'd think he'd be doing better than that. He played with the older Porter kid and a top 10 pg last year on MOKAN when they won Peach Jam and did real well. Maybe Ford wouldn't have needed to get him off MOKAN after all.

Anybody could see Jawun Evans, Jalen Brunson or Demetrius Jackson were future NBA talents.

Groce had little success identifying two and three star HS players that could be coached up to all B10 level by their JR SR years.
I think if you look for players that are rising fairly significantly after their junior year (8+ spots), you would have good starting point of rising 3 star candidate recruits.

Groce constantly was in on players before they blew up. Please also, excluding Bo and Brad Stevens, who actually is good at evaluating 2 star talent who become top level players? Seriously do you realize that for every 1 or 2 of those stories there are a ton more who never make it and you never hear about again? It is such a myth that teams should be built on 2 and 3 star players- this isn't football. Bo is the one example of a coach in a top division who really was able to find players that fit his system, maybe you could add Beilein.

Far far greater reasons for Groce's failure was his coaching (both improving players and scheme), lack of system to recruit to, and his inability to close on those players that he identified early but then blew up and went elsewhere- often not having a reliable 2nd or 3rd option. Too often he went all in on a few players, only to lose them and as a result lost the upper hand on the 2nd tier players he had identified. This resulting with him constantly having to look for transfers or last minute additions to fill the spots.

Saw Hellems play last year at the Highland Invitational against Finke. It was a great match up. At that point his only offer was SIUE which left me scratching my head because he put up over thirty that night. Doesn't surprise me that he is getting major attention because he was special that night. Great size and was scoring at all three levels.

Who are some other comps to this kind of insane rise and how did those guys fair long term? Mark smith is good for the rise but we don't know his long term yet, obviously.

The most recent example of a kid who exploded out of nowhere is Anthony Davis. He was a complete no-name and turned into the top kid in his class over the course of a spring/summer. I am NOT saying that Hellems is in the same class as Davis, but there are kids every spring/summer who show major improvement and move up the rankings a bunch. Sometimes it is a mental change, and sometimes a kid just grows into his body or has their body mature.

Pretty sure we are going to offer Hellems. Dude has been playing out of his mind. Some people will say we shouldn't offer its just one good tournament, but remember that after his junior year no one thought Mark Smith was going to be a high major player. Sometimes the light comes on for a kid and they blow the hell up. Hellems isn't doing this against bums either.

His mixtape shows some athleticism, passing, ball handling and passing...3 pt shooter with ease...he seems to be exactly the type to warrant an offer based on what we know is BU style so far.

I'm betting we do too. One game, maybe luck. He's had 4 games against top EYBL teams and been the star in each game.

He also had a game last year where he scored 40 something against Althoff in a win. He's been pretty good for a while. But then again I also saw him start a fight against CBC too.

I think he scored 30-some against Finke's team last year too. So it's not like he hasn't shown the ability to fill it up in the past.

Pearson is Ayo Dosunmu's teammate at Morgan Park. Was a role player last season, should be a major factor this year.

Potential package deal? I know Pearson has blown up this AAU season, just sounds like Underwood is kind of making that play too with Ayo.

Smart move if true.

If I'm Underwood, I put the full court press on Ayo and move THT to the side. Make Ayo know he's the #1 priority of this class, show him tons of love, etc.

Especially with Michael O'Brien's nugget yesterday about how THT and Ayo likely won't play together in college.

I'd much rather have Ayo than THT anyway. Nothing against THT, but Ayo has star written all over him.

Looked at the fire feed and didn't see anything about him. What tweets are you referring to?

Without any inside info I'm about 98% certain they are already doing all that stuff.

I don't think he winds up at SLU anyway. Mizzery bound.

Pearson is a kid the Irvin's are really pushing. So could be a deal where offering Pearson and keeping the Irvins feelin the love helps with Ayo.

to us, sure. but after reading stuff like that for a solid month, I'm betting THT will be a little more 'up' for the next MP game -- as well as Orr (there are at least 4 Orr players on TR) and Curie (3 players). It's like those Facebook arguments and dis's that lead to trouble. To outsiders it's like 'huh?'. To the people it's directed at, they know what they're being told.

The unspoken message here is "This is how badly we want Ayo."

...and sometimes a kid just grows into his body or has their body mature.

If you had seen me between my sophomore year and my senior year, you would think you were looking at two different people. It amazes me how coaches can be evaluating players on their high school sophomore performance and what they'll be by the end of their senior year. Kids don't blow up. They grow up.

And many aren't through growing until they're in college, and not just in size but in musculature as their hormones catch up with their age.
