I'm all for not being blatantly offensive, but a big chunk of our society needs to drink a hearty cup of "suck it up, buttercup."

I like the idea, but that's way too militaristic for these people. *If* something is proposed, it'll have to be completely and utterly non-"offensive" to everyone and everything.
Is that really so bad though? If 3 years from now I'm cheering on the University of Illinois Bobcats while they defeat USC in the Rose bowl or downing Kentucky in the National Championship, is that really hindering my experience of those events? Do you really think Syracuse fans in 2003 were thinking "yea that national championship was nice, but it would have been so much better if we were still the Saltine Warriors."
Winning creates memories and traditions. All I want for the University of Illinois is
1) For the sports teams to win and
2) The academics to stay strong so my degree continues to have merit.
Sure, I'd love for the Chief to still be dancing, and I will continue to say that the Chief logo is the greatest logo in the history of sports until the day I die, but that stuff all comes in a distant 3rd to those 2 things.

Syracuse wasn't the Saltine Warriors any more than we were the Chief Illiniweks. The change from "Orangemen / Orangewomen" to "Orange" was pretty silly, but they still kept the same basic name of the teams.
And of course I'd like to be successful, but we can be successful as the Fighting Illini. That's our name and identity. Remove the Native American imagery and return it to its original World War I meaning, fine, but the name shouldn't change.
So you'd be fine if your kids refused to acknowledged and even went as far as to disown your parents if coincidentally they won a state championship three years later?
^^^^^this. When there's a change (not if) it's going to be something so completely ridiculous it will make Syracuse's Orange look edgy.I'm all for not being blatantly offensive, but a big chunk of our society needs to drink a hearty cup of "suck it up, buttercup."
Including you and the other whiners on this board who just can't handle losing the War Chant. Get over yourselves and suck it up buttercups. Some people are so sensitive that they'd stop supporting the U of I over a song. We don't need a song or dance to love our alma mater and our teams. Suck...it...up and stop your whining.

...and THIS is the last straw?

Certainly hope its not 'The Wind' - i can just see the 'Break Wind!' signs from our opponents.

Why do you think Stanford picked a giant Redwood ?
The University of Illinois Fighting South Farms Wind? :hand:
And that poor school has yet to recover- terrible academics, bad sports teams, horrible reputation. Let us not repeat that mistake! SMH.

Article from the editor (a UofI alum) in today's Dekalb Daily Chronicle suggesting that a new name for sports teams needs to be found to replace "Fighting Illini". Mentions how he is disappointed with Whitman's signoff to his letter. Suggests "Prairie Fire" as an alternative.
I think there is a group that will not be satisfied until every reference to Native Americans is removed from our university. Since the French borrowed part of a Native American word to name the state I am not sure how they can accomplish this but, am sure it won't stop them from trying.
Except Fighting Illini is not referencing Native Americans...
I really don't care about the war chant. If it were up to me I would keep it for the reason JW talked about in his letter - it reminds me of good times watching Illini sports. Doesn't seem criminal. I have been to FSU games in Tallahassee, and can tell you that in terms of its effect on the crowd, ours is lacking, so if we replace it with something better that builds good feelings in the next generation, that is fine with me.
What I do care very much about is that we talked about this for a year. Our beloved alma mater is slipping in many meaningful rankings. In engineering we used to compete with UC Berkeley for #3 behind MIT and Stanford. We were the birthplace of HAL, the internet (sorry snowflakes, it wasn't Al Gore), and Netscape. We were the home of the two time Nobel prize winner in Physics that invented the transistor and discovered superconductivity. We were clearly the best engineering school between Boston and San Francisco.
Now we will soon be third in the Big 10 in engineering (already behind scUM, and soon Purdue). My brother's boy is looking to study agriculture, and my brother, a UI alum, thinks he should consider Iowa St and Purdue. Our beloved alma mater is bleeding and Chancellor Jones has talked about the war chant for a year!!!! He needs to go, and nothing to do with the war chant. I am tired of one PC obsessed administration after another leading our school, and putting time into things like this while much larger issues are going unaddressed. Frankly if the war chant keeps him from thinking about righting our ship, it should be dropped, in a day. If football keeps him from his more important tasks, we should go the U of Chicago route and drop it. (this coming from a huge UI fan that was on the field in celebration multiple times in the '80s) Why is it so hard to find a university leader that is in love with the core university mission?
