My comparison to Giles is merely that a hometown player (in this case home state vs. out of state in our case home city vs. rival city) is in a recruiting battle that would mean a lot more to the home team. Not saying that every Wake basketball fan doesn't want Ayo, we clearly want him very much, but ya'll need him at a visceral level. I guess a better way of saying it is that you have a lot more to lose. If we don't sign Ayo we are still looking at a great class. If you don't sign Ayo you literally don't have anyone signed. You might sign THT or you might not, but Ayo is really the key for your 18 class. Without him it looks very bleak. With him it is starting to look very good for obvious reasons (to start with a top 30 player is a GREAT start).
Giles was literally playing pick up ball on the weekends with our team two weeks before he announced for Duke (he was on campus all the time for the year preceding his decision), so there was plenty of room for optimism for Wake fans. You never really know what is going to happen in a recruiting battle so every fan base cherry picks their own facts to rely upon. Just look at Nolley's recruitment as the perfect example.
If Ayo is attempting to build tension on the decision I think he is doing a good job
. Wake fans are getting pretty excited about the possibility. If he was posting all Illinois stuff right now I think most of us would have pretty much resigned that he chose the home state team. It won't be an epic meltdown if our hat isn't chosen (I have seen the Cliff Alexander videos...you won't see that), but Ayo has built Wake up pretty good since he left Champaigne.
As a fan I am having a blast following the saga. FWIW I have felt very welcome on this board, and while clearly my hopes are not your hopes it has been a good time inside the bubble of another school for a bit.
