we won "the game" but depending on facts, may have lost a ton of respect among many.

Future winning programs and current blue bloods dont let AAU coaches toy with them....period...dot.

I'm also not thrilled about the impact this could have on our current players. If they believe their coach is beholden to the whims of third parties, then all kinds of decisions are suddenly subject to scrutiny.

When Ayo gets playing time in the future, is it because he deserves it, or because we need to keep Chicago happy? These are the types of potential distractions our players shouldn't have to deal with.

Chis was hired as an assistant with the knowledge that he would bring Ayo to the Illini. Is this a situation where BU is being loyal to Chin?

So...

It sounds like we were never going to have both of them commit to us. It was either one or the other. And with it, the sensitivity of the handlers means you lose either the MIF pipeline or the Simeon pipeline for years to come. (Montagues and Capulets. My goodness.)

No win situation. Some adults are going to get upset, take their ball and go home. If those are your only options, take the 5 Star PG who committed first. Done.

It's going to be absolutely bonkers on here when Ayo ends up signing with Wake over the beloved after his circle feels slighted by a certain player getting as much love as he did.

Total Illinois situation.

These fans that are trashing Ayo and the Irvins need to go. We land our highest rated recruit since Dee Brown and now they are turning on the player and on the coaches that helped us in the situation. Shame on them. Perhaps they will celebrate when they attack Ayo enough so that he does nto feel welcome. From lurking on the Wake board it seems the Wake coaches are already keeping a pulse on the situation.

This is recruiting. We, as a program, make all the accommodations we can to attract said recruit. I have no problem with it, what so ever.

On a side note, Deon is a class act going back to a star recruit at Illinois. Crossed path in the dorms and campus. Wish him well and his message come from a good place. Good that he is back with Illinois in some capacity.

no one will remember this in a week

U joking right?.. you know that we talking about people that remember & list the failed recruits of the past 10 years without even taking a breath. I am one of those people.

If what everyone thinks/is saying happened actually happened, the biggest issue here that I don't think anyone has hit on:

It's not that we lost THT because the Irvin's are arrogant and grudge-carrying, ego-maniacs.

What are future recruits, their parents, and their coaches going to think if it turns out that we literally rescinded an offer to a kid the day he was going to commit?

"Hey Coach Underwood, I love what you're saying, but how can we trust you to do right by our kid when you did what you did to THT?"

Sure. We're in a better position with Whitney and Miller. Those are two players. TWO. And it's not even a guarantee that they'll come here! But now, every single recruit and those close to him will know that Underwood and staff have done this to a recruit.

Unacceptable.

All valid points. Risk vs Reward.

Who knows what really happened though. This could have been a nice smooth discussion in which all sides agreed. However, it just leaked to all of us that he's not coming, so there's pandemonium here.

I just refuse to believe BU pulled the plug during the school day. IF THAT HAPPENED, I'd bet it happened quietly yesterday or the day before

I think the thing to remember is that as much as it hurts today to lose THT, this move will pay dividends in the future...hate to say it but you have to play the game with Chicago

Exactly. YOU HAVE TO PLAY THE GAME.

IF you want to be relevant in college basketball. Simple.

A lot of these folks are probably Wake fans, many late newcomers with low number posts. Seems like trolls, true fans back Ayo.

I really don't think this is a Simeon vs MIF vs UofI...

I see it as THT moved away from the MIF and now there is a divide there, and the MIF doesn't like it so they are making THT pay for it.

Agree.

However, there's already bad blood between Morgan Park and Simeon, so there is absolutely no doubt that the Simeon people are going to interpret this as a major slight -- and Illinois taking sides with the Irvins over Robert Smith.

If you were a Simeon person, how else would you interpret it?

Frankly, I've disliked the way the Irvins have done business for years. Sure, I'm happy we got Ayo, and I sure hope we get other MIF studs. But I HATE being on the Irvin side of an Irvin-Robert Smith feud -- even if the feud isn't directly a MP vs. Simeon thing.

Once again THT had an offer for over 6 months, he risked losing it. Guess what he lost it. You guys get butt hurt so easily, how do you think life works. Risk/Reward, but you guys want the free lunch.

I sometimes sell stock earlier than I want and miss the upside, sometimes I overpay for real estate I don't want to lose. But I do my risk/reward calculation mixed with my own misery index. My kid plays for a travel soccer team whose coach is the varsity coach of the school she will attend. Do you think getting into a pissing contest with him is high on my agenda? THT quit the team and him and his parents never smoothed the situation with MIF/Ayo Family.
so the key here is player commits first and handlers for that recruit retain veto authority for all un-committed recruits.

Ayo is first so his AAU coach gets primary veto authority.....maybe we need to sit down with Irvin with the recruiting grid and he can initial those that he approves.

Illini owns Chicago baby!

#4,964
If THT commits elsewhere so be it. The bottom line is that the Irvins arent going anywhere. They acquire top in state talent every year and if we can't succeed in chicago we will not succeed at all. So ask yourself this question. Do you want to do things the right way by trying to appease everyone or do you want to win? BU and staff are big boys. They can handle themselves. Dont underestimate the impact of chin

Simeon and Illini star understandably not taking it well.

Hope we did not trade one part of Chicago for another.

Got to trust in BU.

And we’ve gotten how many really great Simeon players since Deon...?

I’m fine casting our lot with Mac Irvin. Maybe we’re ultimately just trading one second-banana pipeline for another, but if we can get a few of the guys that MIF has in the pipeline, it’ll be worth it.

I went back and re-read a good portion of this thread and had to smile reading all the "BU can't close," "other first-year coaches have big recruits already," "look at all the guys turning us down" comments. It was apparent early on that BU had made Ayo and THT his top priorities and during all the hand wringing neither of those players had signed elsewhere. Sure Nolley or CC would have been a good get, but when you're recruiting good players you're going to have misses. So far BU and staff have hit on one of their priorities and, hopefully, tonight they'll on the second one. They'll be more misses in the future (hopefully not tonight), but BU and staff will get the players needed.

And as to the THT recruitment and all the he said, she said, dueling experts, comments attributed to this person or that -- it really is ridiculous. Let the kids and their families make the decisions they think are best for them -- and for whatever reasons they deem important. As much as I like to read about recruits, which ones are good and which ones we might get, all these "experts" on twitter and different sites that think they have to say something in order to justify their existence has gotten out of hand. Whew, now I feel better.

I was going to say earlier that it's easy to be a Monday Morning QB, but being so positive about seemingly ready to reel in a THT, I refrained.

After being away from the board until an hour ago and seeing the nuclear meltdown that has occurred, I can only say this is EMBARRASSING! Imo, no way to slice a positive piece of pie; this is a JOKE! No way should it have gotten this far with THT, whoever is extorting the Illinois should be told to kiss their own pipeline!! Honor and a mans word would mean more to Illinois hoops and the university in the long run. If these rumors are true, BU sold his sole to the devil today; I just hope there's more to the story.

Bring on the MIF studs please.

Robert Smith has given us Calvin Brock, DJ Williams, Kendrick Nunn, and Jaylon Tate over the past 10 years. I'd much much rather be in the Irvin's corner than in Smith's corner. Hell Irvins helped us more in one year than Simeon did in the past 10.

I'm sure there is

So what happens in the future when Miller and all the other 5* players on MIF decide to go to Kansas and Duke? The Irvins can't really dictate where their players want to go play

#4,972

Exactly. Team Irvin. Getting Simeons leftovers never did anything for us. Help I wouldn't be surprised if Simeon had THT create all this hype to make Ayo look back and he actually had no intention of committing. Remember he is the one that stopped following him on Twitter a few days ago. Now, if he really wanted to come here, and if he really want to play with Ayo, why do that? Makes you go hmmmm....

After the text I just received, not a chance THT is announcing for Illinois. And yes, I would bet my beach house!

However, I wouldn't bet my beach house that you actually received a text from anyone in the know.

Yeah, I think BU did the best possible in this situation, but this still leaves a bad taste in my mouth. I feel like Simeon and Robert Smith has done their best to send players to Illinois but again, not blue chip talent. If MIF is saying they're going to steer more 5* our way (especially with Chin) then this is the right move. Big boy recruiting fellas, we better get use to it :chief:

LOL'ing at all the fans who in one breath say "we want to compete with the blue bloods" in recruiting and consistent success, but then can't handle the hot stove that is Chicago recruiting.
This is what it is.
You asked for it. You got it. Get over it.:illinois:
