Ask Jay Bilas. A long time ago, Dee Brown getting no call at the end of a game taught me the refs don't let the whistle decide the game. Whatever, it's a flawed game in terms of officiating, and can go either against us or for us.

Pass the damn ball in bounds and none of that matters.

My goodness. This thread is crazy. There was so much improvement in offensive sets in OT from just 2 days ago. I am walking away from this a lot less angry than everyone else

Me too. Immediately afterwards, I was obviously frustrated and did a lap around my house. But while that game was one we could/should have had, Illini basketball is fun again, there's a resiliency there, we have a system, and have shown obvious improvement overall.

It wasn't the officials. Illinois just needed to make one more play. A good inbounds pass or a good block out on the final play and they win. What a strange game. They went from almost no chance to win at half to almost sealing the deal to losing in OT.

They showed their potential in the second half. They made one to many mistakes to win. The still need to figure out how to finish games. While the loss is a gut punch it does give me hope for the rest of the year.

Overall I liked the officiating to be honest. We played a big ten type game. Made it way more fun than calling every tough foul.

Dumbfounded by AJ not on the floor 100% of OT/end of regulation. Two games in a row where he sits his best offensive threat down during winning time, baffles me.

I think Tejon missed one free throw, as did Leron. Yes the ALLY OOP was a terrible decision, but he also was the one who stole the ball. But even with the poor decision on the pass we were in position to win. All we had to do was inbounds the ball. If Williams just keeps the ball in play on the long pass we most likely win.

Lots of positive despite the loss. We will have great PG depth and outstanding guards in the future. AJ total game much improved. Not going to blame Damonte, kid makes smart plays all the time.

Good fight coming back 22 points. Maryland is pretty good.

Right - all of this complaining is moot. Should've inbounded the ball, made a free throw (or two) and won.

Alstork's defense on Cowan in the second half (and OT) was awesome. The screwup on the substitution at the end of the game forced Alstork to sit. Damonte bit on the fake, and Cowan had the And-1.

We must have forced 30 turnovers!

I thought we were down with the horrible inbound plays...just ONE inbound pass away from an incredible win.

This is what the game was all about....maybe the best and worst performance by Coach Underwood. I love watching this team play, especially when they are giving their all on defense...which was not the case in the first half. But they played elite defense with elite effort in the second half. BU did a tremendous job of getting the fire started in his charges and they finally got it lit.

But that OB play was the dumbest play I have ever seen in that situation. It put into play the only outcome that could allow MD. to win the game. Hope lessons were learned because these kids sure paid a huge emotional price for the one point 45 minute loss. All that was needed was to get the ball in bounds to someone and the game was essentially over.

Nevertheless, the second half, or more specifically the last 17.5 of regulation was one of the most exciting and memorable efforts by an Illini team. These kids deserve a pat on the butt for turning a horrendous effort into an exemplary one. You don't see that often, but speed and effort or the lifeblood of this team if they are to win.

When the week began, I thought the possibility of 3 losses was about 5 times the possibility of 3 wins. But I did not expect this team to be denied justice after 3 valiant efforts. Such is life, but they get a chance to bounce back and continue to get better and more consistent. That applies to the coach as well.

We gave the officials multiple chances to "decide the game". They didn't do us any favors but we shot off our own foot so many times it's a little silly to start blaming the refs.

You are correct. Illinois shot themselves in the foot on multiple occasions. Illinois dug themselves in a hole and trailed by 22 points at one point in time during this game. That is a difficult position to overcome even on your home floor.

I just hope this doesn't end up being another wait until next year but it is sure beginning to look like it three losses in a week is never good. Saw some good things but at some point we have to beat someone that is actually good

So many opportunities to finish this game. Bad timeout/bad alley OOP/bad in-bounds pass/bad screen out/bad free throw shooting/bad defensive positioning at the end of the game. That being said, we are gritty, fiercely competitive, and I feel we have a chance to win against every team we play this season!!!!!! I didn’t feel that way last year.

Tired of so called great efforts and excuses for not winning we had game won and didn't execute at the end to win it has been same thing for last five years didn't execute at end of Northwestern game either same old same old

Don't mean this to sound patronizing at all, but have you been following us since 2005? After Weber and Groce, this is certainly not the same old, same old. The frustration after losing a game is always the same, but the hope for where we are heading is not at all the same.

I'm with you. There was a HUGE step forward tonight. Just need to clean some stuff up. Maybe it's just that I expected these types of issues to arise. Im not upset. Do I wish we would have won, of course! However, i'll take the heart and effort in that second half all day, every day. Winning at this level is hard people.

If there was one, it was DaMonte with the Trubisky deep ball with 4 seconds left that sailed over everyone. There were lots of individual things - the Lucas missed free throw near the end, the Kipper semi-box out on the tip in at the end of regulation, etc.

It takes effort to lose a game that you're winning by 2 with 4.6 seconds left.

It also takes effort to get a game into overtime that you're losing by 22 in the second half.

Biggest one IMHO was lucas throwing an oop to alstork up 1 with 30 seconds left. WHY?

Trent Frazier should be running this offense with AJ and Damonte, Kipper, and Black.

The second half wouldn't have even been possible if those guys didn't come in (with Ebo) and show some fire.
that was a solid lineup with Alstork mixed in.

D on Cowan by Damonte and co. overall in 2d half was excellent.

Crap. I would have been happy with 1/3 in this stretch. Could have easily been 2/3 instead of 0/3. There is a lot to like, but we have a loooong way to go.

This is not a Duke, Kentucky, Kansas, etc... recruiting class. Of course this year is going to be building more towards next year. Less Alstork, we don't have one Senior! This year is going to be a lot of peaks and valleys. There will probably be more valleys than peaks for these first three months. As long as the effort and toughness is there....I'm going to enjoy this season.

The only reason the blame is Underwood for calling TO is that the play didn't work. I had no problem with it nor with Williams throwing the ball inbounds. Just poor execution- players stopped moving. If Kipper times his jump on the inbounds: game over. Make 2 FTs: game over. So many little things that we should have done and the ref doesn't get put in the position to make that call.

Throw ball off anyone inbounds play,2point lead you start clock. We lost game but had it won many times. Team has heart, we will win, growing better every game. This evening really suked, many teachable moments.:mad::tsk:
