So... Underwood called a timeout to get the ball inbounds and they throw it away....I just can't even

He called time out to get Jordan into the game - we needed more clutch FT shooters in the game

IT DOES NOT MATTER. Once again the officiating decided a game. That was a clean block. He didnt bump him and change his motion. He had ALL BALL.

This is 99% on bad play in the first half and execution at the end of regulations and OT. It's 1% on a couple of bad calls. They shouldn't have mattered.

What annoyed me even more than the inbound turnover was that completely unnecessary alley oop attempt. When you’re up 1 with little time left that’s not a risk you take. Really was the most Illinois game ever.

Officiating as in the last second of the game. THAT cost us the game. Cowen got stuffed and they bailed him out.
Cowan was legitimately fouled by Alstork both at the end of regulation and at the end of OT. Refs missed the first one (in our favor) and called the last one.

Winning is about talent, effort and paying attention to details.

The little things killed us in consecutive close losses. Turnovers, missing free throws and a lack of execution late.

If they get the ball in, they win. If they box out, they win. If they make free throws, they win......

I'm not disheartened by this at all. The heart and effort in the second half was outstanding. Do that for 40 minutes now.

They'll be fine.

Thank you for the calming effect...my new mantra for Illinois Basketball will now be "They'll be fine." (Note, no sarcasm here at all)

Some freshman played GREAT, Williams/Frazier played very well. Smith once again struggled. Tejon made a bone head play with 30 sec left, but that did not cost us the game.

That lob from Tejon, couldn't get the ball inbounds, missed free throws, miss goaltending call, lots of reasons they couldn't close out. They fought but thing that should have never happened was getting blown out in the first half.

But they also didn't call Cowan ever for pushing off on his drives - so they were letting them play.

Smith is for sure struggling. I hope he catches on faster than slower. We need him now.

Yep. Kid missed free throws again and did that. He should be watching Trent for most of the year and definitely will be watching a freshman and sophomore play over him next year.

you can say that about any game, at any point in history, about any team. The fact of the matter is the official should have swallowed his whistle there with how they called the game all night. end of story. I'm not discrediting the fact that we are who we are and we make mistakes... but that loss is on the official right there. But w/e its only a game

It wasn't the officials. Illinois just needed to make one more play. A good inbounds pass or a good block out on the final play and they win. What a strange game. They went from almost no chance to win at half to almost sealing the deal to losing in OT.

They showed their potential in the second half. They made one to many mistakes to win. The still need to figure out how to finish games. While the loss is a gut punch it does give me hope for the rest of the year.

Trent Frazier should be running this offense with AJ and Damonte, Kipper, and Black.

The second half wouldn't have even been possible if those guys didn't come in (with Ebo) and show some fire.

My goodness. This thread is crazy. There was so much improvement in offensive sets in OT from just 2 days ago. I am walking away from this a lot less angry than everyone else

Ugh

That was such an exciting comeback. But I am so drained. That turnover at the end of regulation is going to stick with me for a long time.

Man they just need to start making winning plays. You can't throw the alley oop, you have to get the ball in bounds. You have to be clutch and make free throws. It is just so maddening to watch these kids blow it when they should have won the last two games.

The expectations on Smith were just higher than the others, so I think he's held to a higher standard. They'll all come along at their own pace. Jordan is blowing up in his Junior year. Just stay with it guys....

WRONG. Our terrible first half cost us the game. Underwood may have cost us the game. He really put Damonte and our team in a bad position at the end of regulation. Took our last timeout before we even tried to run anything and then let, albeit an incredibly poised, freshman inbound the ball. Whatever that play he drew up too was really really bad. I hope he acknowledges how poorly he handled that situation.

EDIT: Te'Jon and his missed free throw and errant ally oop also cost us the game more than a play where there was obvious body contact.
