Transfers Thread

I'm sure the same was said after Kurt Kittner's Freshman year.

We don't yet know what Thomas is capable of in year 2.

We don’t, but let’s not pretend that the situation is ideal for Thomas to start. We really need a serviceable 5th year QB. That allows Thomas to be on the sideline watching and learning this year. That’s what he should have been doing last year too. It also allows us to RS either Rivers or Taylor this year. Then we go into 2019 with Thomas as the likely starter with Rivers or Taylor as the backup.

If Thomas is the starter this year and gets hurt, we can’t RS either of those two guys, and neither of them are a surefire guy that can step into an offense and win games immediately.

I like the way he looks the safety off.

A 5th year transfer would be nice and no Thomas should not have been playing last year in ideal circumstances.

I don't think it is fair to say Thomas is not capable of being a Big 10 quarterback this year because of what we saw last season. It is not uncommon for college athletes make huge strides between their Freshman and Sophomore seasons.

Maybe it's not fair, and I'm sure that he'll show improvement. If he's the starter, I hope he goes out and is all-B1G. I wouldn't count on that happening, and frankly neither should Lovie if he wants to win games this year. Thomas's sample size is just too small.

I'm far from arguing that Thomas is a good bet or sure thing to be a successful Big 10 QB this season. I desperately want a 5th year transfer to give Thomas and Freshman time to develop. My quarrel was with Thomas automatically being labeled as non-viable due to his Freshman performance. Individual growth is likely next season as well as the growth of the ultra young Offensive Line Thomas played behind last year.

According to College Football Reference https://www.sports-reference.com

Cam had a QB rating of 75.

Juice as a Freshman QB rating 91.9

Kittner as a Freshman 78.4

Sophomore season Juice jumped to 119.3 and Kittner jumped to 129.3

I was unable to find high school stats or ranking for Kittner, but Juice was a 4 star prospect that passed for 1840 yards and 22 touchdowns as a HS senior. Thomas was a 3 star prospect that threw for 575 yards and 6 touchdowns as a junior. Assuming he played all 10 games, that 57.5 passing yards per game. I couldn't find his stats senior year. I know that his team was terrible, but if he's talented enough to start for a B1G team, I would have expected to see those stats higher regardless. I think it's asking too much of him to automatically label him as the starter this year.

If I'm not mistaken, Thomas' high school team ran a triple-option scheme which never really let Thomas display his passing ability....Not disagreeing with you entirely, but the triple-option doesn't really allow anybody to display their passing abilities.

I know we are all hoping Smith brings that grad senior Dawkins here, but I found it interesting on the Jeremy Werner show, an Arizona beat writer said Smith wanted the underclassmen Tate to start earlier in the year and RichRod was the main reason he didn't get benched quicker. I am not sure that bods well for us...also just an additional tidbit, he said Dawkins was one of the best running QBs in the country, he just isn't very good at throwing the football

Dawkins at worst pushes Cam. He knows the offense already so ideally he starts, lets Cam learn the O, and allows one of the incoming freshmen to red shirt. This wouldn't automatically spell great things for 2018, but would be tremendous for 2019 and on.

I agree. I still hope he comes here to allow the current QBs to learn a year. I just don't know how the relationship might be between Dawkins and Smith

I think it's safe to say that if the relationship is not good, then Dawkins won't be coming here.

I get ya. Was wondering same thing myself. Illinois offers possible starting job in offense he already knows. Not sure if that is enough though if relationship is less than great.

Are we gonna have enough to field a team by next year? We are a 35yr old farmer playing QB and an old professor/comedian DE thats a vegetarian away from being the real life version of Necessary Roughness.

11 scholarships open for recruits and/or transfers
(10 if Coran Taylor signs)

I am pretty sure we can only bring in 6 more total on scholarship either freshman or transfers, 5 if we include Coran Taylor.

We are basically going to be left with 4 or so spots we can't do anything with, so we basicallygive walk ons a scholarship for the season until we resolve the balance a bit.

The downside of low numbers aside, is anyone else not that concerned about any of the players that left? I mean, I wish them all well, and God knows some of them have been through a lot with the crap that went on here over the last 4 years, but there's not a single one that is transferring that I've looked at and said "damn... we needed that guy to be competitive".

Defensive backs Harvey Clayton Jr. and Frank Sumpter leave Illini

Make it 15 #illini gone. TE Henry McGrew also is not on the spring football roster, Illinois confirms.

These are the guys who we all expected not to return. It's the Nelson, Watson, Jones transfers that hurt our depth. A year ago our '18 recruiting class was expected to be very small, and we ended with openings for a full 25-man class. 2019 class may be much bigger than originally thought also.

That's exactly why this is happening. We need guys that have some impact, or potential impact, 1 or 2 years down the road.

Every player now leaving is being replaced by a walk-on or no one. Would much rather have kept Watson, Megginson, Jones, Nelson, and either James/Sumter. Watson and Nelson would have gotten major snaps. Jones probably would have gotten a decent amount of PT. James/Sumter/Megginson would have at least provided some decent depth or allowed an incoming freshman to redshirt. Would have loved if one of George/Crouch would have stuck around for depth/redshirting opportunity as well.

Why do you think this? There is another signing period coming up on February 7th and ending April 1st. I doubt they'd not try and fill at least a few of those open spots.

Even if they take a flyer on a couple of those borderline Trinity players, or some Rod Smith guys, at least there is some potential for success down the road. Whereas the players that have moved on were unlikely to get much better. The staff has seen enough of them to know the potential wasn't there.
