The continuity of that gif is actually really amazing.
Either that or it's an extremely long take...

I'm sure the same was said after Kurt Kittner's Freshman year.
We don't yet know what Thomas is capable of in year 2.
We don’t, but let’s not pretend that the situation is ideal for Thomas to start. We really need a serviceable 5th year QB. That allows Thomas to be on the sideline watching and learning this year. That’s what he should have been doing last year too. It also allows us to RS either Rivers or Taylor this year. Then we go into 2019 with Thomas as the likely starter with Rivers or Taylor as the backup.
If Thomas is the starter this year and gets hurt, we can’t RS either of those two guys, and neither of them are a surefire guy that can step into an offense and win games immediately.

A 5th year transfer would be nice and no Thomas should not have been playing last year in ideal circumstances.
I don't think it is fair to say Thomas is not capable of being a Big 10 quarterback this year because of what we saw last season. It is not uncommon for college athletes make huge strides between their Freshman and Sophomore seasons.
Maybe it's not fair, and I'm sure that he'll show improvement. If he's the starter, I hope he goes out and is all-B1G. I wouldn't count on that happening, and frankly neither should Lovie if he wants to win games this year. Thomas's sample size is just too small.
Or it's real time and he's out there right now. Check back tonight to see if it's dark out.The continuity of that gif is actually really amazing.

I was unable to find high school stats or ranking for Kittner, but Juice was a 4 star prospect that passed for 1840 yards and 22 touchdowns as a HS senior. Thomas was a 3 star prospect that threw for 575 yards and 6 touchdowns as a junior. Assuming he played all 10 games, that 57.5 passing yards per game. I couldn't find his stats senior year. I know that his team was terrible, but if he's talented enough to start for a B1G team, I would have expected to see those stats higher regardless. I think it's asking too much of him to automatically label him as the starter this year.
Dawkins at worst pushes Cam. He knows the offense already so ideally he starts, lets Cam learn the O, and allows one of the incoming freshmen to red shirt. This wouldn't automatically spell great things for 2018, but would be tremendous for 2019 and on.
I agree. I still hope he comes here to allow the current QBs to learn a year. I just don't know how the relationship might be between Dawkins and Smith

Make it 15 #illini gone. TE Henry McGrew also is not on the spring football roster, Illinois confirms.

The downside of low numbers aside, is anyone else not that concerned about any of the players that left? I mean, I wish them all well, and God knows some of them have been through a lot with the crap that went on here over the last 4 years, but there's not a single one that is transferring that I've looked at and said "damn... we needed that guy to be competitive".

Every player now leaving is being replaced by a walk-on or no one. Would much rather have kept Watson, Megginson, Jones, Nelson, and either James/Sumter. Watson and Nelson would have gotten major snaps. Jones probably would have gotten a decent amount of PT. James/Sumter/Megginson would have at least provided some decent depth or allowed an incoming freshman to redshirt. Would have loved if one of George/Crouch would have stuck around for depth/redshirting opportunity as well.
