That's exactly right. When Jontay goes pro, Sr. is outta there.

Jontay will go pro, I believe long term he might end up having a better NBA career than his more popular/talented brother due to skill set, size etc

A couple of bullet points that need to be listed to try and minimize the amount of bottom lips hanging out.

1. Program was declining rapidly with the previous coach
2. Staff is working their tails off to land recruits that they feel will work for their style of play
3. **Most importantly, the recruits are 17 and 18 yr kids, give them a freaking break on their decision making time frame.

Khalil Whitney with an offer from Mack and Louisville. That didn't take long.
Still can't believe Mack is heading for Louisville with all of the bs that is surrounding the bball program

My question is show in the hell did Cuonzo win 20 games his first year without his best player. And they were in a lot deeper funk than we were. Coach Brad Underwood can outcoach him. I sure don't think It is going to take 3 years for BU to get us on the path we want.:illinois:

Because the SEC pretty well sucked this year despite the number of bids they got to the tourney.

If Kassius Robertson came to Illinois and Alstork went to Mizzou, we would have been in the dance and Mizzou would not have been. He hands down was their MVP.

17 points a game, 80% from the line and almost 44% from 3.

A player like him would have been the difference in the Iowa game, NW, first Nebraska, Maryland, possibly Ohio State and Minnesota plus a couple of non conference games.

A shooter from 3 like him opens the middle to movement.

Jeez I hate defending coaches I'm glad we no longer have like Weber and Groce, but Groce's last class was probably his best. To say we were rapidly declining is not accurate. I don't know what the ranking would have been with Tilmon signed and Mark Smith likely to sign, but it would have been pretty darn good. We probably would have been better this year under Groce, but still likely to miss the tourney.

Nice article by Prince in regards to Griffin, love the kids stance:

"That’s all fine where they have me. I know this: I will bring in shooting to Illinois, and rankings will not matter then,” Griffin said. “Put me up against any other wing in my class, and I’m beating him.Video footage of Griffin makes it look as though he can shoot it, and he is that long athlete Underwood could put on the court with Trent Frazier, Ayo Dosunmu, Aaron Jordan and Da’Monte Williams.Gotta love that attitude coming into the fold!

I agree. He's not getting a lot of buzz from this board, but I think he will be a contributor next season. Heard his dad interviewed recently, but I don't remember by whom. Bottom line was he has been pushed hard by his dad and that's part of the reason they liked Underwood. They think he will get the most out of him (Griffin).

Why?

To pacify message board posters who revel in whining about how bad things are?

Everybody is aware that this past season was rough, and everybody is aware that we're undergoing serious roster turnover. But if we get somebody like Tevian Jones and/or Hinson to join a class with a 5* Chicago PG, then it becomes quite apparent that we are cleaning our house of kids that don't really fit our style, and bringing in kids that do.

This isn't unprecedented. Look at Frank Martin's rebuild at South Carolina. His first three seasons consisted of 14, 14, and 17 wins with lots and lots of turnover.

Look at Beilein at Michigan. His first season was a 10-win season -- a significant drop-off from what Amaker was doing before him. He rebounded in year two, but then year three was another disaster.

Matt Painter won 9 games his first year at Purdue.

Tony Bennett's first two seasons at UVA: 15-16, and 16-15.

Jay Wright's first three years at Villanova: 19, 15, and 18 wins -- all NIT bids.

Mick Cronin's first four years at Cincinnati: 11, 13, 18, and 19 wins -- no NCAA tournaments.

Rick Barnes' first two years at Tennessee: 15 and 16 wins.

Gregg Marshall's first two years at Wichita State: 11 and 17 wins.

Scumbag Pearl's first three seasons at Auburn: 15, 11, and 18 wins.

This is not unusual. And Illinois' situation isn't unique. We need to get a LOT better, but no......we don't need to wage some PR blitz to control the bleeding. This is what happens when non-elite programs rebuild.

Nicely done. On the flipside, our last two coaches didn't seem to follow these pathways. Our coaches seemed to have early success, with players already on the roster from the previous coach, and then take the program down the slope to where we currently reside. I'm liking BU's approach to the future, at this time. The next two recruiting cycles will be key to the future of this program and this staff.

On Griffin....I think he may be the "trent frazier" of this class. Meaning that TF was more less second fiddle to MS expectations. No one expected what we got from TF. I dont know if Griffin will have TF-like numbers as a Freshman, but I have a really good feeling,.. expecting AG to be an "impact player" vs a "contributor". We ll see.

All respect and love for Griffin, but I think not. Ayo changes things even if he struggles on D out of the gates and merely contributes

I will place my bet on Kane actually! Ayo will give us hopefully what we can expect so he cannot in essence be the surprise of the group as Trent may have been for many. Kane is the likely choice.:chief:

Your selective quoting of coaches win totals for their first few seasons reminded me of the times when posters would post Coach K’s win totals for his first few years as concrete evidence that Groce was one more year away from turning this around. Good memories.

Ugh. How did Prince's editor not catch "could care less" and immediately fix it and educate him?

His Dad came on Tay and Carp last week I believe. Really good interview and very interesting perspective from a parent ( who happens to be a former NBA player and current NBA assistant coach). I think Griffin was a great get this late in the year for our staff. Sounds like his Dad has done a great job of teaching him the game.

I, for one, did not know what to expect, not having seen either play or any film. But I am an avid reader and listen to what evaluators say. The opinon of Frazier that resulted was that he could well have a higher upside due to speed, handle, energy, and shooting skills. This proved to be true though at an even higher level than anyone expected. I always thought Smith looked a step slow and no one really knew what his defensive IQ would be. Along with his confidence meter rolling downhill all season, it all led to disappointment for him, though I think many fans realized his future was brighter than he did at the end of the season.

My point is that Frazier was no huge surprise, just a bright spot, and all the credit goes to him. I hope he continues to improve and raise his skill levels at both ends, becoming a B1G warrior...a strong, confident, and aggressive player who knows the game and makes few mistakes. We hope they all do.

Now, if Matic makes the B1G most improved player list next year, he will be the "Trent Frazier" of the team. No one knows who it will be, but confidence, skill level, and smart, aggressive play is not bestowed on anyone....it is the result of personal resolve, and I, for one, do not know any of these guys well enough to predict who has it.
