Yeah this is the question. Why walk away from what we understand are commitable offers to walk on anywhere?
1. Money is clearly not an issue.
2. Dream school/family connections
3. Connected to the Porters

At UI, this kid is just in the "we hope he develops and exceeds expectations" group of young bigs. At Mizzou, he probably has a lead on playing time after a red shirt year and Tilmon, Porter leave.

Or it could prove that our staff is fumbling around in the dark a lot of the time.

I look at our recruiting class, and see a glass that's either half full, or half empty, depending on your corresponding optimism. I'm ok with it personally --I wasn't expecting miracles.

That said, there were so, so many misses in this cycle. It does not make me confident in our recruiting. If this is our baseline and we start turning things around on the court, we could be fine, but man, how many guys did we whiff on this year?

All of the ones we did not sign. :D

The outcome of the recruiting class will have to be judged over the next four years, but the process has been frankly difficult to explain.

As I've said many times, I'm a sucker for plans. I do not see what the plan is here.

When you're filling eight slots, you'd expect twice as many misses compared to when you only need to fill four, right? (Not that it's at all ideal to have to run a class this big, of course.)

Braun to Mizzou as preferred walk on should prove a few things. 1) he isn’t very good 2) this may be just how desperate Illinois is right now and 3) just how delusional a fan base can be.

Not your normal Stu like post. :)

Looks like Kipper will be playing the 4 again. I don't see Ebo and Kane playing together unless Ebo has drastically improved his shooting. That leaves Jones and Giorgio as Kipper's backups. Don't worry about the offense but sure leaves a hole in the defense.

POI If you remove MS, MA, and MF from the 3 pt % (conference) we have the same as our opponents. Three starters that were projected to be good shooters and stunk it up.

The problem is not that there is no plan. The problem is not being able to getting the players to execute it. At least not enough of them.

+1, Mom said, boy, you go to mizznoz, Mark Smith will show you how it's done. All the great players want Clownzo to coach them. Moving on.;):illinois:

You don't see what the plan is? Length, athleticism and shooting. There's your plan.

I see the style of play plan. And I see how it fits with what Underwood has had success with before, I'm all on board with that and I want to stick with it and see it through despite how awful the execution was this year.

It's the roster construction plan I'm struggling with.

I wonder what a Fall class start of THT, Nolley and Castleton would have done?

They need guys to play pickup with and why not do it with top competition.

I guess Nevada isn't like competition or anything. It just seems odd that Nevada would want him doing this and Illinois would let him do it. What if he picks up weird habits or playstyles not in line with Nevada or learns our players strengths and weaknesses etc. Or gets hurt at Illinois' gym. I can't imagine that headline. I mean I get why its good to compete with good talent, just seems weird to me. I've just never heard of another teams player training with a different team in the offseason just for fun, like a summer loan haha.

Is it training or more like open gym? If it's like open gym, how do they stop that? Can't be any worse than habits picked up in AAU ball, LOL!!!

It's not like Parker Braun was going to fit much into the PF rotation this season anyways. I mean the guy openly said he probably needed a redshirt year.

As do every one of our bigs. He would have seen minutes.

We may not be getting every player we want, but I definitely see roster construction.

He’s following the Frank Martin approach it would seem. Recruit a bunch of players each class, (preferably highly rated but projects are okay too) bank on about 2-4 being high major quality and sticking around and have the rest transfer.

Rinse and repeat until you have 2-4 per class for class balance, or just never stop recruiting like that since players leave all the time. (Time will tell what we do)

Last year we recruited 5 freshman. TF, MS, GO, DW, and MV. 3 stuck, 2 transferred. I bet by this time next year, our 2018 class will have shrunk by at least 2 players regardless of how successful our year is. (Maybe more since its so big)
I agree which is why filling another slot was important.

I'm more of a sucker for results than plans.

Don't tell me about the labor, just show me the baby!
