I will agree that we have always had enough talent to be better than we have been in recent years, but not necessarily to be competing for championships, whether in the B1G or beyond.

Depends on the definition of "competing" but I don't disagree.

We've won recruitments well enough to have never missed the tourney in the last decade. That's a small thing, and also a huge thing.

Not every school has the ability to broker that deal. 150k is a lot.

But if you think Kansas' last-minute bid on Cliff was an increase from $0, or that Leron Black really just loved exchanging bible verses with Groce via text, or that all of JCL's other suitors just magically disappeared overnight and it became us or freakin' UNLV, or that Chin Coleman's salary flows entirely to the Coleman household, or that Jerrance Howard was hired by Larry Brown and then Bill Self based solely on his ability to "relate" to players, man do I have a bridge to sell you.

We aren't a heavyweight in this game, not like the old days. We've brought a lot of knives to a lot of gunfights. But we're in this game. Everyone is.

An AD with a legal background makes one a little gun shy or should we say knife shy. But now back to some recruiting news, Shannon's visit to DC is back on, Timme should be visiting C/U, Kofi is down to 3 (supposedly FSU, UConn & ILL) and should be visiting in November, Oscar and UK have cooled on each other, and The Show is thinking about 5th year prep. Magic number is down to 42.:)

I missed this. Was this announced somewhere?

My feeling is that, over the course of this downturn we've been living, we have had an above average number of 4-star recruits that simply don't pan out as hoped. This might be due to bad luck with which recruits we end up landing, or bad coaching, or bad player development... It's probably a combination of those things.

You're making exactly my point.

And sure, landing more 4 stars would help defray the risk. Better scouting, coaching, roster construction and player development would eliminate the risk.

Thanks for some real info. Personally, would've preferred an alert about this than the president testing whatever the heck just blared 80 times in my office.

I love Liddell. Am pretty salty about losing him. That said, Tshiebwe > Liddell (for us, anyway). Would be an absolute monster get.

Oscar has a UK offer, albeit uncommitable, looks like a good old fashion knife fight between Huggy and BU.

Yeah I thought once he got the UK offer we were in a holding pattern until UK decides what they want to do

Meh....Yeah....I could be wrong (but I doubt it)....just feels like we are wasting our time with Q. I've coached long enough to know and understand the process but I still question what is the draw to the I double L for Q? My gut tells me we are a distant third.

Well for one, we don't have a criminal defense lawyer saying in his opening statement in the NIKE corruption case that we pay players like Oregon just had.

UK is definitely in a holding pattern with respect to OT. That does not mean that OT will wait for UK. It is really a bit of a Mexican standoff with these types of recruitments. UK wants someone they covet more highly and lately they think they can get someone higher on their list than OT. OT probably likes the idea of playing at UK. WVU and UI probably want to get a commitment in the early signing period. At some point they need to seriously consider other options for the C position.

Now there will always be a landing spot for a player of OT's ability but if those are the 3 schools he prefers it is unlikely he waits for UK until spring. Someone has to blink first. Either UK changes his status to a take now instead of waiting, UI/WVU moves to a secondary target, or most likely he just makes a decision.

Between that and Syracuse being ranked 225th for offensive efficiency, we could have a chance but it'll be hard to beat those Canadian connections.

Indeed. Cuse did a great job of diverting Dustin Ford's Canadian pipeline.

As a lurker / reader of this message board for years, it is clear to me that certain message board personalities to a great extent dominate this board and serve to form the perception of readers of this board. With that in mind, I'd like to offer a concise alternative perspective that is more in line with how our society truly functions. This perspective requires one to tear apart the current framework under which our respective minds have been molded to accept or deny information. As one of the unwashed masses, we are indoctrinated in this system to believe that good always wins. They want us to believe in others and to expect our fellow man to act in such a way that is scrupulous. Along that line of thinking, perhaps some of you who speak of facilities and other aspects of recruiting should consider the things that likely do not readily enter into your mind as you carry out your life in a relatively honorable manner when compared to those in the world of college basketball where money flows freely and abundantly. Eviscerate the naivety that has been inculcated into our minds. Just as politics has a public face and a private face so too does college basketball. To cut this short, it seems to me that many on this board are looking at are deficiencies in basketball through an inadequate lens.

The actual truth is that everybody is cheating, Illinois included. Some schools are better at it than others, and it's not always a question of how much you're willing to cheat.

But again, any despair at our inability to get the talent needs to reckon with the fact that we've ALWAYS had the talent, every single year, as our program has collapsed.

Look elsewhere.

I don't believe that for 1 second, and you need to back that up. You really enjoy spouting that trash out seeing what kind of reaction you'll evoke.
