Made Reggie Love's Top 7.

How much pull will Patterson have with the '20 recruits? I imagine it won't be as much compared to the '19 class, but is there a major drop off after '20 or '21?

Being from the area, he will always have pull. He won’t have the relationships that he had this year for very long, but he is still who he is and holds a lot of trust from the stl community. Okpala is a good example of what he will always he capable of

Well all these players are on offense so maybe rod smith has something to do with it?

Most players are coming because of Lovie. Rs is still a part of the puzzle, but doesn’t have the celebrity or name recognition that Lovie has

The post was probably referring to RS's offensive scheme and ability to move the ball.

Petitbon is a huge add. Really improves our OL and OL depth (which was scary). Can't underestimate what Petitbon's experience can mean to the younger guys.

Why didn't we do this last year?

You are starting to see kids cycle through who Lovie and staff have previously recruited and have a relationship with. Sounds like these guys were concerned about Illinois in the early years (they were wise to be), but they really liked Lovie and felt comfortable with him. Much easier to convince a guy to transfer to your school when you have a good prior relationship with them and now your program is a bit more stable.

That sounds reasonable. It would have been hard to imagine this all was in the realm of possibility a couple months so. I feel like some stars had to align for the staff to pull in these guys.

Should we really expect a leap on defense?

We should be expecting/demanding it.

Phillips is a big loss but he's the only loss from last year's two deep on the defensive side of the ball if you don't count B. Williams. That's probably why we're not seeing transfers targeted on that side of the ball.

A year of experience, S+C and two new coaches should help.

There's also the addition of guys like Eifler, V. Brown and Beason. We also need full years from Milan, Woods, Hobbs and Adams. Cooper could help out as a rotational LB.

If the defense can just get back to where they were in 2017 then we should win six games.

Definitely fortuitous on who was looking to transfer. A.D. Miller from Bishop Dunne, Jeff Thomas and Ford from downstate and I'm not sure about the Petition connection except that he went to high school with Reggie Corbin and we are recruiting his brother.

I know some people tossed around ND QB Brandon Wimbush's name last week. He visited UCF over the weekend and has also been linked to Penn State.

I was doing some research on Richie Petitbon. Coming out of high school he was rated by 24-7 @ .9696-- he also had offers from Alabama (obviously), LSU, Florida State, Nebraska, Ohio State, Penn State and many others. This is a really, really good addition for the Illini.

Maybe the coach getting an extension had something to do with getting higher rated commits.......

Rod said Lovie a extension was a big reason, but ultimately, I think our staff has been working recruiting now since this round of kids were sophomores. So the first group to start the process with Lovie and company is happening now. iPads t

Lovie also has a strong brand with pros, so it’s not a surprise we’ve seen some children of pros join us.

Petitbon comes from an nfl family. They know Lovie and know his reputation. He is the type of coach you want your kids to play for.

Regarding Reggie Love and Illini in his Top 7, Autry Denson was recruiting him to Notre Dame. Denson has just accepted the HC position at Charleston Southern. Granted, Notre Dame is Notre Dame...and Denson leaving may not even matter. But that speaks to one of the things that Josh communicated when he extended Lovie.....continuity. I think that matters to some kids.

For everyone wondering how big of a leap are defense can make this upcoming season I think it depends on who we hire at Defensive Coordniator, Lovie has to get this right. Our offense this year added only 3-4 new starters with Bush, Corbin*(he was technically the 2nd back until game 4/5), Green, and Barker(who didn’t really make an impact). Rod Smith took this offense that was one of the worst in the nation under Garrick McGee to above average nationally. Our defense is making a similar leap and gaining 3-4 starters most likely so the talent jump won’t be that huge, but with a good coordinator we can be respectable within the Big Ten. The Talent is here, with one good hire then the Winning should be soon. Go Illini!

By the way anyone want to place their bets on the first person in 2020 to commit? My money is on Antonio Johnson

So with addition of Richie I wonder if that changes things regarding Werner's tweet earlier this week that the staff was working on getting some visitors's lined up for later this month with the idea of finishing up the remainder of this class?
