Aren't we all just taking lucky stabs at the eventual coach, to follow up claiming sagacious foresight!
Perhaps, but I've got to say how much I enjoy reading the pros and cons of each candidate (and quickly googling each and picturing them as Illini coach) as really thoughtful and insightful posters here debate the merits of each one. It's great stuff.

Would guess that Fickell ends up at Nebby, Mich, or Penn St. When the opportunity presents itself.

Someone recently told me that he turned down Michigan once before but I don't know how accurate that claim is. Do coaches seeking a big pay day honor rivalries? For that matter, does a program like Michigan stay away from a product of their archrival?

No idea.

For anyone who is curious, illini0440's previous avatar was Tim Beckman. Now it's Jim Leonhard, current Defensive Coordinator/DBs coach for Wisconsin. Read into that whatever you will.
I for one am not trusting a guy with "Lasagna" in his closing. I am calling a head fake. One Seriously in the Know dudE pErhaps?

Ummmmmm flag on that one my dude.

They are comparable, just switch weather conditions
Wrong. Big 10 is 5 times more competitive......and is clearly #2 behind the SEC. The ACC is fifth best Power 5 conference, behind the Big 12. and PAC 12.

Over the long haul (let's say the past 20 years):
Big 10: Five perennials = OSU, Michigan, Wisconsin, PSU, Iowa and then 2 pretty good teams in NW and MSU most years; 7 total
ACC: One perennial = Clemson; and then Florida State and Miami are historically pretty good; 3 total

Beyond those three, the ACC occasionally has teams that play well for a 1 or 2 year stretch. That's it. And right now, the ACC is way down with only Clemson as a team that can compete year-in/year-out with the Top 10-15 teams in the nation.

Should help with ticket sales too.
I love the Marching Illini as much as the next alum, but if she could be talked into doing all of the halftime shows in addition to coaching duties.... I'd be ok with it.

Ask Bo Schembechler's offspring. ;) Coaches ignored such alleged taboos 50 years ago; the nature of man remains unchanged.

And how many Big 10 appearances have been made in the CFP Championship since it was started? 1

How many Big 10 appearances in the BCS National Championship since 2010? 1

ACC has 2 schools and 5 appearances.

We can both agree that the Big 12 and the Pac 12 need to get out.

I am not trying to get into an argument about this, but saying the ACC is inferior to the Big 10 is intellectually dishonest. I legit think they are comparable.

If Bielema is the target, someone had better take scientific measurements of the size of the chip currently resting on his shoulder. It needs to be huge and he needs to come here angry and determined to prove something. Let’s not again be the Roth IRA for a 50-something brand-name coach already in semi-retirement mode.

I think he has a large chip on his shoulder. He and Wisconsin hate each other at this point based on Barry Alvarez comments after he left. I'd love to hear all the boos he gets as Illinois coach going into Camp Randall. That'd be awesome to see! I think if it's Bielema, were getting a very motivated coach that will do whatever it takes to beat Wisconsin. That includes going head to head with them and beating them in recruiting. Poaching some of their staff. etc etc.

I'll say with intellectual honesty that the Big 10 is a better football conference than the ACC.

I will admit, I am having a tough time taking that seriously when Michigan, Penn State, and Michigan State are wrecks and the conference changed its own rules to get Ohio State into the conference championship...

You aren't really arguing in favor of the ACC conference. You're saying there's a couple great teams. I don't think the two of you are actually disagreeing.

My understanding was that he was saying top to bottom, Big 10 is superior to ACC.

I believe both have a powerhouse at the top, followed by 1-2 strong teams and then the rest trying to pick up the scraps

Over the last 20 years, the Big 10 is 12-12 against ACC teams in bowl games.
The 7 Big 10 teams you listed, are 4-4 against the ACC opponents you listed, in bowl games.
The 3 ACC teams you listed are 5-4 against the Big 10 teams you listed, in bowl games.
