Illinois 98, Penn State 81 Postgame

I think it was more you don’t go for a steal when the game is over and the winning team is letting the clock run out
I feel like Hummel was right on this one. It must have been from some trash talk before. Going for a steal is meh in a game you're up 15 in. You expect that when you're running the clock.

It is really clear Curbello has to play as much as possible. The game changed once he came in and started driving and dishing to Kofi. In my opinion he looks better as a freshman than Deron did. Deron was a tremendous point guard obviously, but just think what Curbello will look like in 2 years. He really is special.
I actually like Kofi surrounded by Curbello, Trent, DMW and Ayo. As everyone has said if Grand can help at the 4, then you rotate the 3 guards and keep DMW in as much as he can olay as he is Fara for away the best defender on the team. Trent is good also, just so small. Having Miller and Trent on the floor with Kofi and Curbello just gives AC so many options. That says nothing of the way Ayo can take over on the drive or run out.

That bald headed ref is turrible... Kinda looked like he was instant on calling something. Refs and replay are ruining the game. How do they look at the for 5 mins and come up with that, when at the same time - they reviewed the call on DMW and nothing...

Reffage in this league is suffering.

Im telling you the home team has booze and women in refs locker room after the game

Yeah...the trick is the fouling however. Coming into this game he was at like 7.5 fouls per 40 or something, meaning he cant play much more than 20-25 mins mathematically.
Today only 2 though so theres some big improvement. If we can keep him on the floor for 30/game that offense will be hummin

Curbelo had starter minutes (27) so not necessary he starts but finishes. May be the spark needed off the bench but just before we are down by fifteen. Grandison looked like good Kipper tonite.

I watched - I know Illini's defense has been criticized, but PSU shot 54% from the field. I thought Illini effort was better than than, PSU hot/lucky most of the night. Glad to see Illinois still able to salt it away.

yeah they were taking (and making) the shots we wanted them to take. Knocked down a lot of long and/or step back/fade 2s. Sometimes it's just like that

I think what Ayo took exception to was after the guy went for the steal he extended his right arm and pushed Curbelo to the ground. Ayo had a perfect view of that and didn’t like it.

I thought it did look like he extended the arm as Curbelo went down - could easily have been seen as aggressive in the moment but tame from other camera angles

I said in a previous thread that I wanted to be that team that when people saw them down by a significant margin, they still thought “yeah, but they’ll probably come back and win anyway.“ I don’t want to get that far behind again just to get that payoff...but it sure was sweet to see tonight.
I get you; however, I'd rather see a redux of the days when we had a team of this talent and, say, got up on Northwestern in Evanston 32-4 or something.

Lot of people didn’t like my suggestion in the pre-game thread when I suggested starting Grandison and bringing in Miller off the bench might pay some dividends. Logic wasn’t that Grandy was better than a Miller, but getting Grandy some chunks of time would make him more comfortable while Miller might relax some off the bench. Though I don’t think that will happen, Grandison played 15 minutes to Miller’s 18, and results looked good. I noticed that Grandison was on the floor when Illini started to mount their first half comeback. Key to that was his D. He was stopping the ball no matter whose man it was, and also staying in front of his man. Second half he really played well. Hopefully the light has gone on and he can continue that play.

I like your idea better. Like to keep a team under 80 also.
