Like... I soooooo wanted to be on Lovie's side with his recruiting strategies and coaching philosophies, and whatnot. But, why does it seem to me that BB has done more for retention and recruiting in two weeks than Lovie had done in 5 years? I mean, coaching will remain to be seen, but so far, I wish I would have graded BB's hiring higher on the poll!

(I think I gave it a C... whoops!)

So I’m pretty happy with Bret. But here’s a nitpick. I know he closed his interviews when he was at uw with “on Wisconsin” and it helped the phrase catch on nationally. and he’s trying to do the same with ending his interviews with I-L-L, but the hosts don’t know what to do or won’t respond.
Laurence Holmes was like “yeah I’m a DePaul guy so I’m not doing that” (Laurence I like you but DePaul doesn’t even have football!) and I think Rome said I L L back cause he didn’t know what to do.

I think Bret should reserve the I-L-L I-N-I for one on ones with Illini nation and just sign off his interviews with a hearty “Go Illini!!!”
:)

eh. I'm personally O.K. with it. It is specific to us as opposed to Go Illini that is very generic. Also it would be better having people hear and hopefully in the future repeat ILL. Then we can give them the added enjoyment of the INI to complete their education.
But I understand the stance

Let's settle on a hearty Oskee wow-wow! Seems to be the most uniquely Illini thing to say.

I thought this was an interesting article on Woods returning:

I particularly liked this passage:

Woods said his talk with Bielema helped reel him back in for a fifth year.

“He’s about his business,” Woods said. “I guess you could call him a salesman because he sold me to come back.

Woods is now the eighth Illinois senior that has bought into Bielema’s sales pitch — pretty good numbers for a new guy on the job.

“He said, ‘[If] we round up all the guys from last season and bring them into this season, we can take off,’” Woods said. “He said this team could be very special if we just buy into the process that he has for us. And then if we do that, everything will go the way we want it to go.”

I would love to see us run some two tight end formations with Barker and Ford. Not sure if Petersen is open to that but I don't think we ever saw that under Rod and it's a shame not to use those weapons at our disposal.

pretty sure when asked, Petersen said they ran a lot of 11 and 12 personnel at App St due to their available roster construction last season. Not sure what his "preferred" personnel group is; but yeah I would bet he'd be open to it. Especially when we have Barker and Ford and BB in charge.

Didn't realize there were thoughts of him leaving, but being loaded at TE with Bret Bielema taking over is niiiiiiiice
Me neither. I guess with the Covid year and no sitting out transfers that literally everyone is a free agent. Good to know we're getting almost our entire starting offense back.

One thing is for sure. BB is hitting the ground running. He's actively recruiting the current roster to stay and adding immediate help, and he's what, like 2 weeks into this thing? He sure isn't acting like he wants a "blow it all up" year. He's trying to be competitive now, and that's very exciting.

I agree with this

The one year of extra eligibility will actually help us a ton. Bring back a number of guys that have experience and also add a number that can step in and add depth from day one with Bielema running the show. I am seeing encouraging signs already that he has not only added a few transfers but some that have 2-3 years of eligibility left. Bring in as many guys as you can get during this time. Depth and competition for positions is needed.

The kicking market isn't like other things because every team only has one of each, and they tend to be sticky. And obviously teams don't like expending resources on them.

It wouldn't be that unusual for Hayes to go undrafted and not have a roster spot initially and then wind up a Pro Bowler in a couple of years.
I acknowledged that he was a great punter. My point was how the commenter thought that he had a better chance than Green to make it to an NFL roster. I am not sure why you are making this about something different.

STLK, what does 11 and 12 personnel mean?

Agreed. I was walking out of my office building someone went I-L-L when I had my shirt on and I was so caught offguard I just said "YEP"

I FELT SUPER ASHAMED, but maybe we shouldn't use cstchphrases that require two people 🤣

I don't have to worry about things like that happening in South Carolina. When people see me out wearing Illini gear, they just think "what is that sad creature"
