With how well our opponents are already shooting 3s against us this year, I shudder to think of what might happen if we do decide to double Garza.

I'm pretty sure I read somewhere we've limited our opponents to shooting 3s in the 30% range, which would be one of the lowest in the country? Can someone validate this. Don't want to provide misinformation.

On the year, opponents are shooting 33.6% against us from 3. That puts our defense at a little worse than average for all DI teams (181/347). If you look at just conference play, our opponents have shot 37.0% against us. That would place us in the bottom 20% of teams in the country (288/347).

I think a lot of this can be attributed to poor perimeter defense from our Bigs and Forwards. Giorgi, Coleman, Kofi, and Damonte come to mind.

I’m hoping we find a game to play before this one. We all know we can beat Iowa, but I don’t think we have all the bugs worked out just yet. Iowa’s defense is better than it was and their offense is elite. It will take our best effort of the year IMO.

"FWIW I've been told by several people who would know Illinois is *expecting to play a non-conference game this weekend.
Last night #Illini HC Brad Underwood said they're 'aggressively trying to find a non-conference opponent that will meet some of our testing protocols'"

We need to get off to a fast start against Iowa, and start plucking hawk feathers from the tipoff. 1611192019431.png

Some random stats in prep for game.
Hawkeyes lead B10 categories:
-rebounds
-3p%
-assists
-Points/game

Quick review of Minny victory over Hawkeyes..Minny did this:

-held IA under 40% FG
-won 3ps....17 to 10 3P
(Minny with 43 attempts!)
-22 assists

Last years Illini win over Hawks:
- we shot 60%+ on 2p
- we had 20 assists and 5 turnovers
- Garza ended with 4 fouls

As usual....I think our defensive intensity, ball movement and taking care of ball are key.

One really good thing about a week and a half is Gentry tape breakdown of Hawk games should be really thorough... and hopefully he can pick out their few weaknesses.

This is the most anticipated game of year for me....lets get it done!

Here is how I would defend Iowa. I actually would NOT try to double Garza. He is a very good passer and will find a shooter who will make you pay. We do not want Iowa shooters to get hot. Let Garza get his 25 points and keep Kofi out of foul trouble so that he can go at Garza on the other end. What I don't want is Fredrick, Weiskamp, Bohannon to get hot and then the game gets away from you.
BU, you see this?

Some prayers have been answered in those B10 games too. Everyone has had their best night of year against us.

Would hate to have no games for 10 days. Not a good thing.
Haven't looked at their schedules, but Illinois should schedule Eastern Illinois, Illinois State, or Bradley...maybe Indiana State. They're close.

Looks like Indiana State doesn't play until next Monday.

Has any team this season had any luck slowing down Garza this season, i.e. 18 points instead of 26, 6 rebound instead of 10.
Any thoughts on how to accomplish this?
KC has a pretty decent game against him the end of last season didn't he???
Accidental hammer fist blows to the top of his head from Kofi like the PSU guy last night?

10 days to perfect the accidental hammer fist on a rebound. Feel sorry for Lieb and others that he practices on to get it right.

Always up for other ideas, just a thought

I like where your heads at. I expect or should I say hope Underwood and staff have a similar if not almost identical defensive gameplan as to what they did against Michigan last year in Champaign. Turn it into a two on two game. Trent and Kofi vs Bohannon and Garza in the pick and roll game. Deny all shooters. If they want to go through Garza in the post, fine. Let Kofi play him straight up and again, deny all shooters. I’ll take my chances.

I'm worried how many 3's Garza will hit this game. Kofi has struggled guarding the perimeter and Garza loves to pick-and-pop.

Length and quickness are key to closing out on 3 point shooters. We aren’t long and/or quick.
Watching the Michigan-Maryland game Maryland looked a little quicker than the Illini, and Michigan looked a little quicker than Maryland. To beat Iowa and Michigan, we need to play "Big 10" defense from start to finish.

And he's shooting 48% from 3 this year (62.5% overall). I think Garza is going to get his, don't think we have anyone that can effectively shut him down. As someone said earlier, I think we have to make sure nobody else gets going. I wouldn't be surprised if the winning game here ends up with Garza 30, and nobody else from Iowa in double digits.
