“I could not be prouder of this group of guys and their toughness and ability to step up,” Illinois coach Brad Underwood said. “Grit was a big part of it today.

Illinois’ Trent Frazier sank two free throws with 5.7 seconds remaining to make it 72-69. Illinois then fouled Trevor Anderson before Wisconsin could attempt a tying 3-pointer, and an exchange of words near the Wisconsin bench resulted in offsetting technical fouls.
“One of their players came into the (Wisconsin) huddle, which was not supposed to happen,” Wisconsin coach Greg Gard said. “The officials took care of that and I thought handled it the right way.”

Illinois led by as many as 14 in the second half before Trice got Wisconsin back into the game and nearly put the Badgers over the top. Illinois survived by making its final five field-goal attempts and going 10 of 10 from the free-throw line over the last 44 seconds.

“You just got to make sure you do your job at your end,” Underwood said. “And we did with our last five field goals and our last 10 free throws – and a lot of prayer.”

It looked like we were going to win by 20 late in the fourth. Then the last few minutes of the game, the only thing we did well is shoot free throws. Not a great finish, felt like if there was another minute on the clock wisconsin wins.
Yea. And if the dog hadn't stopped to crap, he'd have caught the rabbit.

Maybe so. I wonder how BU and Illini fans would react if an opposing player came up and tried to listen in when underwood is taking to a player during a dead ball.
This wasn't a coach pulling a player aside during a dead ball. This was a coach and all bench coaches out on the floor effectively acting out a time out. They do not have the right to the floor - so basically - even though what they were trying to do was against the rules, they should have moved their "spontaneous timeout."

It was basically Belo enforcing the rule by being a pest when the refs won't do it themselves.

If one of our coaches or players pushed him aside, or started mouthing off - I'd have not liked that. In other words, if you try to get away with something illegal - don't be surprised if someone calls you on it and if you get caught - don't go on the offensive.

We won.......despite no Ayo....despite 20 turnovers.............
We won...................made last 5 fg attempts....made last ft attempts......

It's confusing to see our WIN picked apart like we lost..........

WE WON.............................................

Agreed 100%. It was a weird ending to an ugly game on National TV, but still a W. On to AA, where we will probably be a 7 or 8 point underdog with no Ayo.

I’m well aware of the situation that occurred. If your trying to tell me Curbello went into a crowd of Wisconsin players and coaches to enforce an illegal timeout rule I don’t buy it. And even if he did it wasn’t smart. I highly doubt this situation will happen again and if it does I will be critical of that decision by our players again. That’s the coaches job not the players.
He didn't 'go into a crowd' he was standing nearby and they didn't like it. Tough. Again, if you're trying to do something illegal, don't get pissed off at the bystander. Its all gamesmanship - they tried to get away with an illegal timeout, Belo tried to disrupt it. I have no issue with that as long as there is no physical contact. If Wisc initiates something - its up to the ref to call it correctly.

No way our coaches had time to see that and get the refs to break it up.

Orlando was screaming at Damonte after his technical and Brad yelled at Orlando to calm down. I bet Orlando didnt like that much
This all didnt look as bad as I thought when I re-watched it this morning. OA shouted a DMW, Brad shouted to cool down and then another assitant coach kind of moved him back to cool off.

I'd be surprised this would linger given these guys have grown up in the emotion of high level college bball.

Wishful thinking....there is not a single B1G player who is "scared" of any other team. That said, there is only so much room on the podium and every coach and player is trying to get there. Good for the league, not good for traditional powers. But for every Illini fan, seeing their team be competitive in the nation's elite hoops conference is great entertainment. Enjoy....it never lasts forever.....but I sure would like to see Kofi and Curbelo be around as long as Davison and Settles (8?, 10?, 12?) but without the injuries.
Maybe scared is not the right word. But I guarantee you they are concerned that we have turned a corner and are coming for them. Guys like Izzo especially do not lay down and just let someone take what they feel is theirs. It is irritating to him that he now has to be concerned with a team that used to be pretty much a guaranteed win. I also guarantee he is not alone in that concern.

Good point- it was literally our biggest win all year- solidifies a 2 seed, shows we can win on the road as an underdog -
Without our best player - the importance of the win could not be overstated- it’s huge

it’s only the second time all year we won as an underdog and the first was Duke who turned out to not be as good as expected this year so that almost doesn’t count (in fairness we only played one other game as an underdog, Baylor). We’re about to play two more games as underdogs so let’s keep the upset streak going!

That just didn't sound right... that between 1988 and 2005 we never beat them 3 straight in the regular season. So I checked your work and you're right! Unbelievable!!

(I also looked back a bit further and we won something like 16 straight leading up to a 20 point loss in Madison on 2/18/89 -- Gill was out and Anderson, Liberty, Bardo, and Battle all held to single digits scoring, Hamilton led with 13.)
And that's the Badger club I grew up watching and loving. (That damned Bo Ryan.) I would never have guessed Wisconsin could actually compete at a national level like they did.

I wonder if the Badger comment pages are filled with blaming Trice for having had four turnovers and zero rebounds?
Shame on him for being so careless and not giving more effort. Surely he cost them the game.

I'm guessing the so-so defense in the last 4 minutes was due to a combination of exhaustion and a little over-confidence that the game was won.
Fortunately, like great teams, we had just enough left to get 'er done.
So-so defense?! Trice was Reggie Miller-lite out there with a defender in his face. He straight up splashed them. Sometimes you just need to tip your cap.

Yea and one of those 3's was a bank shot with TF in his face....sometimes you're hot....sometimes you're not...... the final 3 minutes of the game Trice was HOT!!

Brad Davison shot 1 of 9 for four points. He effectively gave up four points on one bush-league play where a player does something dirty and tries to get it called on the other guy, known as “a Davison”.
His combined stats including the first meeting:
1-15 shooting
0-8 from three
4 total points scored
4 total points given away for being a complete dingus

I was gonna let his mistake go, but I need to clarify your correction. Illinois did win three regulars in a row more recently than the '80s.

Illinois won both regular games against Wisconsin in 2004-05 then their only game in 2005-06. The BTT game in 2005 made it four games in a row of any type.

Still impressive to dramatically turn the streak in our favor, though.

Haha never heard that one before.

Someone who hasn't seen the game asked why all the criticism of the team and I answered. I'm still impressed with the win and glad we overcame the near-miracle comeback. Obviously some things to work on.

Are we bad at in-bound plays under pressure or does this happen to every team?

The baseline inbound play is a novelty and won't work long term. Trent slipped on one and it was game over. Players often break to the sideline which puts them in perfect position to get trapped.

Just set some picks and get people open in the middle of the court. Though I did like when Grandison took off before the ref handed us the ball and the announcer acted like it was a false start.

Couldn’t sleep and watched the reply this a.m.

I thought we did an UNBELIEVABLE job of finishing that game! BU is dead right.
Only 2 of Trices shots were “poorly” guarded. He banked one in. He hit one on the move leaning right. He just had a ridiculous, INSANE finish.....and we still won! On the road. In the B1G.
Only two of the out of bounds plays were really bad, and one of them was immediately redeemed by Curb “Appeal“🤣 (sorry to whoever had this auto correct).

Kofi dunk, Curbelo layup, Curbelo steal and dunk, DMFW step back J.....FT FT FT FT FT FT FT FT FT.

This team deserves heaps Of praise for that finish in spite of Tricegate.

Curbelo tossing the ball to the ref on the inbounds plays is a big no no. He did it 3 or 4 times yesterday.

Officially yes, however, he takes ridiculous shots at times that have no shot at even getting to the rim. For me a shot that doesn't draw iron
and the other team comes up with the ball is a to. Just sayin.
If you're going to arbitrarily increase/decrease stats as you see fit, than you need to bump up Andre's assists numbers a ton. His passing skills and ability to see the floor, break down defenses extends way beyond his assist numbers. Many of his best passes/reads are of the hockey assist variety.

After all the debate, I still disagree with this. Tucker physically push Andre. That was way more than anything Damonte did. I have no problem with what he did to defend Curbelo. I think it happened so fast, many including Antigua, didnot realize what happened. The refs didn’t either. As the coach, Tucker should be in hot water for this, should be reprimanded.
I can't see the replay clearly. Can someone tell me why Belo gets that close in the first place? Doesn't he walk towards the bench,is someone pushing him closer towards their player's or coach? Just curious not stating anything other than my view was obstructed. I was wondering if Belo just stayed away maybe nothing happens. Can someone straighten me out? Just asking.
