Illinois 76, Michigan 53 Postgame

Ok, here it is, what you've all been waiting for: The Review of the game after second viewing (unbiased, of course)

MI: Over-rated, clods, no evident talent, dispirited, slow, boring, etc.

ILL: Very, very good, athletic, quick/fast, better uniforms, fine Americans even if they don't hail from the good old USA!

That's all, folks.

Please, for me, will Illini wear the navy blue unis sometime soon? I may be in the minority, but I love the navy blues - really tough looking.

On to The Ohio State University game.

GO FIGHTING ILLINOISANS!

I don’t think Coach Azz ‘ole would intentionally mispronounce Ayo’s name. He’s one of the best coaches in the BIG. I have all the respect in the world for Coach Azz ‘ole.
Ever listen to the local sports call in show? An astounding number of people can’t pronounce half the players on the team. And they are fans of the team and have probably heard it 100 times.

IMHO those blue unis should never see the court again... Bad juju with those. Someone did the math last year and it was baaaaaaad.

Sorry for the multiple posts. Have been away all afternoon and am batch processing.

I saw this earlier and found it interesting. All Illini teams ranked according to a system that includes point differentials and strength-of schedule going back to 1950.

I haven't thought deeply about how valid this is. However, it shows that all earlier (as in: last week) kvetching about this team might be a wee bit misplaced ;)

look at that. 1999-2005 was a nice run in the BIG ... hopefully we are starting something like that now based on these stats

I’m remembering four short years ago when quite a few people were sad we didn’t hire Indiana Archie as our coach. Or the Arizona guy — sorry, the University-4 guy. Or Shaka Smart.

Got to say that things seem to have worked out.

We play with urgency from the tipoff because we know we can not rely on his heroics at the end of a game. With Ayo in, there is more of a hero comeback vibe to this team. We need to play with our hair on fire from the start and put teams away right away.

This is a clear challenge to Ayo to get his team to continue to play at this level when he comes back.
Exactly. Ayo et al with a 40 minute sense of urgency puts them on another level and a legit national championship contender.

Well, if uniform math is anything like the "if Team A beats team B by 25, and Team C loses to Team B by 5, then Team A will beat Team C by double digits" math....then I think it's mostly voodoo.

Man, I want to know who on this board took the Vegas odds for Illinois with a Natty b/4 Ayo and Kofi’s return. Drinks on you!

I agree. UM played early games against nobody. Then their early big schedule was multiple games against the bottom of the league. And then the media took notice in their record and the love fest started. There is a reason nobody ranked them in the preseason. They are so over rated. Can't wait for them to flame out.

I rewatched tonight because, of course. I did not notice until the 2nd viewing that on Chaundee Brown’s airball free throw (late 2nd half), Giorgi and DaMonte started high-fiving each other and pointing toward the bench and smiling. It was actually pretty funny, but I wonder what it was about. Did they have a bet with someone on the bench revolving around an opponent airball?

How many people have run and played a game recently on this board? I'm sure it's a wide variance of age and shape. I still play consistently. After a year off because of the "pandemic" I started playing again. Absolutely exhausting. Watching these guards go flying in for a layup, ending up on their back, and then getting up quickly and running back to guard is amazing to me. I'd be gassed after doing that once or twice.
Oh to be 19 again. A quick mile to warm up before practice, stretching and an hour or two of drill and scrimmage. Suicides, wind sprints and free throws to end the day (miss your free throw? how about some more suicides? let's go again!) Then another cool mile to wind down and hit the showers. We used to do that six days a week with free throw practice every morning an hour before school. It seemed like fun at the time. I do miss being able to run like a deer though. Now the knees are shot and it's all I can do to hit the gym and lift weights four times a week (which really helped the knees). I think I'll stick to watching games on TV with friends as I have no desire to blow an achilles/hamstring this weekend.

Michigan has 1 or 2 seed even with a sweep I think. I would just like to hang a banner and Izzo could help with that.
But izzo thinks differently....

"I heard Michigan lost. But they're still the best team in this league. Everybody knows it." – Tom Izzo

Yep, everybody, Tom. Everybody.

Live by the kenpom, die by the kenpom. Or so I've been told.
Kenpom bugs me because it calcifies as the season goes along. It doesn’t feel flexible enough, especially for games like this. If this had happened early, we would have been rewarded greater.

I mentioned that I felt Michigan's biggest weakness was the size and below average athleticism of their two guards Smith and Brooks. They delivered as promised, neirher could keep Trent and especially Belo out of the lane. Smith is especially slow and has no chance of keeping Belo in front of him.

Add Ayo to the mix and there is such a disparity in speed I don't think Michigan can counter over a whole game. Their big man needs to stay glued to Kofi so the guards penetrate and have little fear of getting blocked.

Just got to thinking about put back rebounds. Giorgi, Jac, Hawk, DMW, and Kofi all had at least one. Team rebounding demonstrated.
