Saw that Indiana was trying to get Holtmann but got denied. Looks like they are trying to outkick their coverage to me.

I firmly believe you should not fire a coach until you are one (or a backup) lined up. I dont know if that is exactly how things go down but JW seems to operate that way

I feel like the football coaches were more or less lined up. I don't believe it was the case with the Groce firing. I think he had a list on that one and a relatively attractive job (compared to football) that he knew could get someone good.

Perhaps but he hired underwood in < 1 week. IU is on day 11 and you can feel the anxiety around the program IMO

I agree, but considering how we all view how BU vs. Archie turned out in hindsight, none of this will matter to IU if they get the right choice in the end. We'll have to wait and see how it plays out.

True.., may the transfer rules make this feel worse this year

I wouldn’t close the book on Shaka the coach just get. The UT athletic culture is one of entitlement and arrogance. It is rooted in the expectation that “we should be good because we’re UT.” It is really kind of sickening.

Charlie Strong was supposed to be the guy
Shaka was supposed to be the guy
Tom Herman was supposed to be the guy

The issue is institutional.

I feel the excitement for my Marquette friends because he is/was a sought-after name, but I agree he isn't the greatest coach, unless you're cool with just getting to the tournament and maybe winning a game.

Shaka Smart NCAA tournament performance:

VCU
2010 :
2011 : Final Four (11 seed)
2012 : Round of 32 (12 seed)
2013 : Round of 32 (5 seed)
2014 : Round of 64 (5 seed)
2015 : Round of 64 (7 seed)

Texas
2016 : Round of 64 (6 seed)
2017 :
2018 : Round of 64 (10 seed)
2019 :
2020 : Covid year (BracketMatrix had them as 2nd team out of tourney)
2021 : Round of 64 (3 seed)

Yeah I think Shaka's "havoc" system works the best in a small conference where the ball handling isn't as good. Major conference players are too good, and can too easily beat any press. Its another reason why NBA never presses. Dribblers are just too good.

I don't think he'll do much better than Wojo did at Marquette. And the Texas basketball job is a very cushy job since Texas only cares about football. If I was Underwood, I'd definitely listen if they came calling.

Austin is a hell of a lot nicer than Champaign lol
Cost of living out of sight. Traffic now worse than Dallas or Houston. Boosters always up your a**. Housing market highest around. Don’t think it is paradise anymore like it was 25 years ago.

UT is a bit toxic at the moment with boosters and AD. The comfort level in C-U is much higher.
Unless of course UT is an “elite” dream job? /s👊🏻😎

Kinda interesting that a couple national guys reported they reached out to Holtmann about the job opening and they were quickly shouted down by local media. Guessing it's highly frowned upon to snipe a head coach inside the Big Ten.
