I am wondering if BU has embraced a new coaching model...

One that would keep his pay lower & raise the pay of really good assistants so that being a career assistant on an "elite" staff would become desirable. Makes far more sense to me than head coaches getting 5, 7, 8 million dollars a year & always shuffling assistants.
Perhaps, but I doubt it. Undie made his bones working in the trenches. He didn't start making decent money until late in his career. Relative to his peers he has a pretty small window in which to build his nest egg.

LOL, some of you are too much. Someone asked if this is over; in response, I relayed a bit of information I heard from a Sierra Canyon parent who was around Calipari yesterday which suggests that it is not "over." I didn't get more specific, because I wasn't there and have my own questions about the context of what I was told; I am not and have never claimed to be an "insider." TIFWIW. There has been no press release from either camp, which is another data point to consider whether "this is over." All that said, I hope that Whitman announces contract extensions for OA and CC tomorrow a.m. Carry on. ;-)

With a 5 yr contract that pays 3.5 to 4M, I think BU will be fine long term.

The idea of rolling assistants is "not ideal" unless they are going to a head coach spot.

Our current assistants know the culture and BU....and "killing it" w.r.t player development and recruiting.

Not the end of the world if OA departs, but would be a set back for staff. IMO, we need to do everything possible to retain.

Unless Underwood is looking to move to a place where houses costs millions, he already has his nest egg.

3M * 4 years * 50% (taxes) = 6M
- 500k for a really nice house in CU.
- 500k to send the three kids to college
5M * 3% = 150k spendable per year w/o touching principal. Each of the kids gets ~1.8M (adjusted for inflation) as an inheritance; (cash+house)/3.
Given that he is 57, he may be able to spend ~5%/year instead which is 250k (Sorry kids, you get less.)

Every additional year at 3M increases his annual budget by 45-75k.

In his position, I would happily spend my"raises" on my support staff. The money is already there. Now it is about quality of life and reaching other success goals. A well oiled machine makes life a whole lot easier.

Not bad but think I want a house in Naples and a boat too!

His salary will be doubled. It’s not all financially driven though. There are some things they aren’t happy with at Illinois and I’m not talking about recruiting restrictions or anything like that.
Hey, this isn't Louisville...

Who are they? Both OA and Chin? Or just Chin's family? I'm also curious what area Underwood is trying to fix (responsibilities, recruiting territory, title?).

Maybe you would but how many coaches can you name who do that?

Ref. "Some things they aren’t happy with at Illinois"....

This could range from not enough steakhouses in CU, to facilities, to travel budget, to years of contract, size of office,...the possibilities are endless...

That’s nice of you to decide how much money is enough for BU.
