I haven’t read much of this thread. . . but under current federal immigration law, as an international student, Kofi (+ all other international student athletes) is prohibited from earning NIL income while on a F1 student visa. Kofi would need a P-1A visa (athletic, non-student visa) to earn such income.

Kofi has dual citizenship, so its not an issue.

Edit: This was reported by Scott Beatty.

Universities, particularly schools like UIUC that have large international populations, know all about this. I'm also sure that with BU recruiting so many international players and seeing the NIL coming down the pipeline, they've put everything in place that they need in order to make sure international student athletes get paid.

I would counter that the premise of a "Championship-starved fan base" driving revenue is an example of outdated thinking. The big NIL money won't come from the starving fan base. There are piles of corporate, national, international, possibly even cosmic money out there. See BigTen vs SEC as an example. SEC football fans are the hungriest (and most numerous) in the land, but yet the Big Ten brought in far more revenue than the SEC.

Bottom line: we should absolutely in no way think that Kentucky has an advantage over us in the NIL game. This is instead an opportunity to create an advantage FOR us.
I don't think there's much corporate money for these individual players. I just don't think it helps their bottom line that much. Hell I don't think pro athletes are doing that much.

The key is finding alumni to overpay for an endorsement or personal appearance.

Kofi just hopped on an Instagram live with Coleman Hawkins. They were goofing around some, but Coleman asked when Kofi was coming back and it sounded like he said “never.” Kofi also said that he hadn’t seen the thing about the cross country kid running out we want Kofi.

It’s probably not worth reading too much into, but “never” is different than espousing by saying “I don’t know man.”

Now that's an even more interesting question. Does it have to be active team marking? Because Illinois still holds the patent for the Chief logo, so technically it would be the school getting money for it and they would have to license it out, making it sort of official again.
Back in the day you could start a student association as a loophole to reserve university facilities and playing fields etc..to register as an assoc though we had to sit through an intro meeting where they explained pretty much any combination (on a tshirt for example) that could be misconstrued as chief, orange and blue, the letter I etc belonged to the University. It was surprisingly broad and all encompassing. The Muck Fichagan tshirt vendor guy did ok though

It is good Kofi is still connecting with CH. "Never" is pretty blunt ..that doesn't require any reading into his thinking.

There have definitely been plenty of times messing with friends when they asked when I was doing something that I responded never when I knew damn well I was going to do it. I wouldn't read anything into kids messing around with each friends. Doesn't mean he's coming back but this also isn't some sort of official announcement.

Exactly. I know this will never happen, but we've got to stop trying to read the tea leaves so hard on social media.

Also, we're getting hung up on "sounded like" now? Good Lord.

Is there a copy of this video somewhere? Maybe what sounds like “never” also sounds like “next week”

I have no way to confirm what was said on the video because I didn't see it. How is that reading tea leaves? He was literally asked when he was coming back and provided a direct answer.

I'm just generally exasperated that we're all so willing to be sucked in to social media clues time and time again. I don't think we'll ever learn as a fan base not to read too much into things, but then again, that's why we're on this message board.

Bottom line is that all of these athletes are social media savvy. Nothing they do/say should be taken as gospel truth until it's an official announcement.

One thing to keep in mind is this was a live stream, not the same as a regilar social media post, which these athletes are careful about curating. Unless you think this exchange was scripted and rehearsed in advance, it's doubtful Kofi was being as careful with his response as he would be in a regular social media post.

And even then...well...how many "110% committed" end up changing their mind/tune. That is in general. If Kofi announces he's back, going to Kentucky, or somewhere else, I won't doubt that. Right now, it is wait and see, but I am not optimistic.

Also true, but these guys get more training on live response than your average user. With hype at stake, I just don't see him giving a legit response until he's ready to. He's seen how much interaction his posts get. I don't think he's likely to forget that, particularly on a live stream with a teammate who's fan base has been vocal about him coming back.
