I thought I read somewhere that if a player earns more through his NIL than his parents income then we would be taken off scholarship and have to pay for his tuition
I hadn't heard that rule. Wow, that would be a terrible way to determine who should be paying their own way. There is WAY too big a discrepancy between the incomes of the parents. It should likely be based on the tuition costs, making $50k more than RB&T? Or, a flat number, $150k+?

I might have read it wrong. I remember the number being 41-42k I think.

It would mess with Pell Grant money, which is federal aid based on family need. I'm sure some schools include Pell Grants for those student athletes who qualify to free up money elsewhere. The rest of the scholarship money should just come from the DIA and wouldn't be impacted by NIL earnings.

TL;DR: student athletes at DI schools won't have to pay their own way. Athletic departments just can't use Pell Grants to help offset costs if the student athlete makes more than $40k a year.

In short, this is going to screw DIII more than DI or DII since they can't give strictly athletic scholarships.

I really hope they aren't wasting Pell grant dollars on scholarship athletes whose costs are easily covered via DIA donations.

I would bet they're more often used for non-revenue athletes. Also, more useful at DIII schools where they can't give athletic scholarships. I doubt this would ever impact a P5 school tbh

I don't think we should pay college players .. But if that's the case then they should remove scholarships all together. And make them pay their own way.. It's a way to get the powerhouse schools back in top.. Seriously who are ppl gonna watch in final game... Baylor Virginia? Or UK DUKE??

I've been thinking about it. Pell Grant dollars come from the federal, not state, government. I wouldn't be that surprised if schools (including Illinois) made use of them to show that they were letting in a certain amount of low-income and first generation students since those two things usually go hand-in-hand. It might not have a negative impact on P5 schools, but it likely will change how they do their accounting.

It's a gray area schools may operate in to boost their stats and show that they're putting federal money to good use.

I doubt this means a player like Cockburn or Curbelo ever has to pay their tuition, but it could force changes in the financial aid department.

Just going to say it again. Until there is a waiver approved he cannot come back to this institution. So all of this is most likely a show to buy time for that to happen.

For what it's worth I have also seen him tell Kennedy Miles 2 years in a row that he would return to campus "Nevervember"

What kind of waiver?

For him to sell his gear he had to basically sign that he was done with the institution. Which servers his scholarship and changes his visa status. So the university has to find a way to undo all of this and deal with the fact he made thousands of dollars before NIL was a thing kind of waiver.

Regarding his visa status, ilini80 posted earlier that Kofi had dual citizenship according to Scott Beatty.

I'm no insider, but it's obvious that Kofi is not coming back to Illinois. Selling his Illini swag, his team canvassing top programs for NIL potential... As a fanbase we need to stop clinging to epherial scenarios where things go our way in face of overwhelming opposing evidence.

Guys like Fletch and Geoff's impact can't be emphasized enough. I wonder if this is a slight @ to Kofi

Wasn't Ayo one of the dudes on Adam's Instagram Live as he was deciding where to transfer? Things seemed fine with them. I think it's more likely that Ayo looks at this as a business decision and isn't shading anyone.

I didn't mean to suggest "shade". I don't think Ayo feels strongly about it. Moreso meant it as a, "why not come back, Kofi"?

But I also don't think people's interactions on Instagram Live tell us anything about how people feel about one another.

Kind of like a “maybe one of the reasons Kofi would come back?”

I think the fact they were hanging out is what tells us how they feel about each other.

I would say that if you're willing to hop on IG Live with someone, you probably don't hate them, but I get what you're saying re: Ayo and Kofi. It was the "slight @ Kofi" in your initial post that had me thinking shade.

I do agree that that Fletch would be a key reason to come back. I'll admit that I was thrilled to see Kodi's birthday shout out to Fletch, but I'm still trying to not get my hopes up too much.

I agree. I think it's safe to assume he's gone and will be ecstatic if he decides otherwise.

Wouldn't this apply to any university, not just UI?
