4-star 2022 guard Jayden Epps commits to Illini

“It was a great visit. I have a great relationship with Coach Frazier and Coach Underwood,” Epps told Illini Inquirer. “It was just a great environment and I love it there. Illinois was a great school to visit and I love it.”

Have a month, Chester Frazier. The new Illini assistant has now landed a pair of top-100 guards in recent weeks with Epps and four-star lefty Sencire Harris out of St. Vincent-St. Mary.

Jerry Meyer's scouting report on Epps (from Mar 29):
A physically well built combo guard at 6-2. Has a quick burst with strength giving him explosiveness in tight spaces. A polished three-level scorer with an old school efficient pull up game in the midrange. Long range shot must be respected. Strong driver especially going right. Loves to finish at rim with a one hand scoop lay up. Capable distributer as well. Strong and composed with the basketball. Rebounds his position well. Has quality lateral quickness and the ability to defend the one through the three.

Gotta love this blueprint of recruiting guys between 50-120. College ball is built on veteran guards. Not good enough to move on right away but enough to eventually become an all American. Some rankings:

Jared Butler: 97
Davion Mitchell: 59
Franz Wagner: 114
Corey Kispert: 106
James Bouknight: 66

Love what Frazier has done in his short time here.

With two 4 star guards committed for 2022 and our depth at guard, do we see a Reggie Bass de-commit soon? I wouldn't be too upset to have that scholarship back to try to find more 4's or a 5.

Edit: updated my wording to committed instead of signed as @Dandy1 pointed out, they're verbally committed, not signed.

Would be shocked if Bass stuck around in this class. He was OA's guy anyway, got a feeling the staff will want that scholarship open

How long has Chester been on the job? 6 weeks? Absolutely killing it. Bodes very well for our future.

Epps was one of the keys to this class IMO. We needed someone to take the keys after Belo and he fits the bill perfectly. Huge, huge get.
Chester is doing such a great job already, so happy for him
