For initial playing time certainly- but if Ayo isn’t better than Caruso next year, he shouldn’t really be playing anyway. Ayo has to beat out an NBA player for playing time no matter where he is
Agree, but Caruso is making pretty good money, which means that it is doubtful he will be able to beat him out... Also, Caruso is a pretty good role player. Ayo will be fine. If in his 2nd year he isn't able to break into the rotation, then we should be concerned, IMO.

Looking at the landscape, it wouldn't be a bad thing if he was traded to the Pelicans or Celtics.

Looking like Ayo will be an “end of the bench guy” with the FA signings the Bulls have made thus far. As a Bulls fan i like it, as an Ayo fan....not so much.

What you dont want is this to turn into a Brian Scalabrine or Tacko Fallo in Boston situation.

You almost have to ignore the money these days in the NBA given it’s so crazy even for role players- but your point is valid- the fact that the Bulls felt they needed to get Caruso at $9M/yr to play a role that Ayo could have played - rotation defensive first guard with some playmaking (with Ayo having a lot more talent/upside) on the surface is bad for Ayo

But it also likely means they aren’t getting Derozan, so they likely felt they needed to spend the money they could and Caruso was there. The silver lining is there will be no pressure for Ayo to play much at all right away so he’ll have time to develop. If he does and plays well they will find the playing time for him

HE also played a playoff game with a dislocated elbow......and he still was effective.
The 2011 Rondo was what I thought we were getting when we traded Jae Crowder to get him in 2014. Turns out he wasnt that Rondo at all anymore.

I don't think it would have changed much this year either way. Most rookies do not see the floor much, if at all -- particularly non-lottery picks. Of course there's always exceptions -- your Malcom Brogdons -- but a lot of the guys that see a lot of floor time as rookies out of necessity (b/c their team is bad) also often develop some bad habits. Better to earn your PT rather than be given it, imo, and learn from (and compete against in practice) guys that have achieved some success already in the NBA. If Ayo is ready and able to contribute next year (his 2nd), then the team will find a way to get him on the floor, whether by trading away guys or by simply playing the best players.

I also like the guys Chicago has signed for their fit with Ayo. Each one is a player that can play on and off the ball. Heck, I think there's a good argument that none of those top backcourt players is a true PG. And there's enough size to get away with playing any of them at the 3 too (maybe not all the time, but some). These signings simplify what Ayo needs to focus on to see the court in the short term (defense, shooting), which I think is generally good for a player's long-term prospects.

After his deplorable, low-energy stint in Dallas (I'm a Mavs fan) back in 2014/15, I really soured on Rondo. He had a decent year after that, but all downhill from there.

It seems silly now, but there were times in Michael Jordan’s early basketball life that people doubted him. And what did he do about that? He used this as motivation to become the Greatest Baller In History.

Ayo now has similar motivation. His personality is not as edgy as Michael, but he has the same burning desire to be great and to put his doubters to shame. Michael developed the weaker spots in his floor game as time went on, and no doubt Ayo will do the same.

We know the Loyola game sucked. The Illini looked lost and at the worst possible time. But putting a better spin on it... Ayo’s struggles in that game lowered his draft stock which was not good for him in the short term, but really good for him in the long term.

With the Bulls, he is surrounded by people who want him to do well as much as he wants to. And the Bulls certainly need someone with his local ties and upside potential. In other words, the Loyola game will turn out to be a blessing for Ayo and Bulls fans.

Whether Ayo becomes an All-Star or fits as a valuable sixth man, his fate is in his hands now. That’s all anybody can ask but the chance to prove to the World what you can do. And Illini Nation will smile every time that round ball hits the sweet spot in the middle of the twine and sings a glorious tune with Ayo smiling and waving his hands victoriously high into the sky with Big Orange glee.

I am not saying Ayo will not make it in the NBA. He can, and I have faith that his skills, determination, work ethic, and attitude will prove that to be true. However, if Ayo is an NBA bust (hoping that’s not the case) he still has the skills to play professionally for at least a decade, assuming he stays healthy. A couple years potentially struggling to find his sweet spot in the NBA followed by another 8 years of professional hoops overseas still will afford Ayo financial security for his lifetime. Illini fans all want nothing but success, but the reality is that generational financial security is a pretty sweet spot for anyone to be in as a 20 something.

Good point. Curbelo is selling his Tshirts, Frazier is selling something,... Kofi likely will make much money this year.
Ayo can make a lot more money with a much larger fan base with the Bulls, along with Illinois fans still buying his jerseys and whatever shirts he wants to sell as well. This is the best scenario he could be in being a Chicago kid.

Yes there are not a lot of minutes left over between Ball, Lavine, Caruso, White, and now Derozan. Ayo is going to have to really blow up to crack the rotation now. Probably will have to be content with sitting on the end of the bench and working hard in practice.
The key for Ayo is to play defense more like Ball & Caruso than Lavine, White or Derozan.
