Sure they get a six figure salary for one year to play in the league. To the point several people have brought up, most people don't care about and have no plans to watch these games. So while it worked out for someone like Jonathan Kuminga does anyone really think he couldn't have made just as much at a school like UK now that NIL is a thing. I personally think the potential earnings from NIL at a college more than compensate for the salary in these leagues. The fanbases for major college basketball schools is huge and will drive sales of gear as well as boost social media following which will be monetized.

The only real reason to go to these league is because the person just hates the idea of school to the point that they won't even tolerate the appearance of getting an education.
Which was in the second part of my whole point. These kids can get paid now without having to deal with school. How many of these kids do you really think school is a priority for?

We’re going to need some beef down low next year when Kofi is gone, but these guys look a little slow on their feet.
Maybe, but taking a charge just got a lot more dangerous!

At this point none of the Bass stuff is confirmed. I also kinda think it's a little in poor taste to write the guy off like this, on the basis of unconfirmed rumors. If true, I don't fault the staff for doing their due diligence, but I'd also feel bad for Bass. It's all just rumors right now though.
Thank you!!! I'm glad someone is showing common sense.

Just saying for projection purposes. If the class ends up being 5-6 they will add 3-4 more kids. I think 6 would be a bit extreme for 1 class and I'd expect if Belo goes pro they would look to add a veteran pg. Although in a world where ALL of the top priorities want to commit (Schutt, Whitmore, Huff, Corhen) I could see them taking 6. That, of course, is a pipe dream

People getting paid for goods or services is commerce.
that‘s a great point, thanks. I don’t think that’s exactly what I was getting at though. If I pay a woman for sex, a quim
pro quo if you will, I am engaging in commerce. If I do it in Illinois I’m also breaking the law. I’m thinking a booster buying a bunch of stuff in order to funnel money to a player might just may be construed as money laundering.

Perhaps before the NIL changes. Now it is completely legitimate (and in my opinion, justified) commerce.

These kids have a great talent. There's no reason they shouldn't be compensated somehow for it just like a computer science student could be while still in school.

I know I’m the minority but I consider 4 free years of school quite the compensation package

Agreed....plus if things don't work out....if they want a 2nd opportunity in life, they might be interested in classes later when older.

You mean the public state school that we all pay taxes to fund? The same one that pays it's Chancellor and President half a million dollars per year?

Every public state funded school should be free to every American that wants to attend. Pay for your housing and food.
Public education should be free.
You want to pay $100K to go to ND or Dook.....Ivy league? Knock yourself and your parents bank accounts out.

We all wonder why we turn on the news and watch the ignorance that permeates our society now. We turned education in to a marketable product and public schools into corporations. As a country we gave up on educating the masses. /rant

This could be the start of a great discussion, but probably not one relevant to this thread (or board).

Uhh, no. Just because the state provides a service doesn't mean it should be free. Is public transportation free? Is the post office free? Is driving on the roads free? If you want to use a service that the state provides the users of the service should pay. Otherwise you get distorted markets where the government decides what is valued vs the people.

The taxes we pay don't come close to covering the cost of public higher education. Tuition, research dollars, donations and sales of goods and services pick up the rest. I believe the State of Illinois provides less than 15% of the revenue of the University of Illinois.

You missed my point I think. I'm aware of all of the things you mentioned. Higher public education in this country is a racket....not a service. Public transportation is free to a large portion of our society.

It was a /rant and I'm not going to derail the thread further. Apologies for the derail.
As mentioned prior it would be a very interesting discussion on a different forum.

Something something recruiting anyone?

I think the state contribution is about 45%. Many of the accounting pages I've seen include what I would consider pass through money. e.g. McKinley fees that pay for McKinley are counted as both a revenue source and an expense. Similarly research income and expenses. If you pull these two items out, the state portion is ~45% of what remains (It comes in two parts: payments and appropriations.)
