Is there a lot of money coming off the books? It looks to me like Molina’s extension plus arbitration estimates put the Cardinals right back at the ~$130MM payroll next year that they are this year (assuming they don’t pick up Carpenter’s option, which they won’t) before signing a single free agent.

I wouldn't be so sure about this, especially if the DH comes into the NL with the new CBA.

I have to imagine the club that refused Wong's $12.5MM option, just one Covid shortened season removed from a 5+ WAR season, isn't going to pick up the $12MM option for a DH with a .615 OPS and an oWAR of 0.2. I hope not at least. There have to be better options already in the organization, and if not, you could surely find a better option for $10MM (12 minus the $2MM buyout)

The next 13 games will likely determine if this team is ready to fight for the playoffs. I don't have any faith in their ability to show up, but 3 at the Reds, 3 at the Brewers, hosting LAD for 4 and the Reds for 3. In fact, it doesn't get a lot easier after that. Mets, Padres, Brewers, Cubs, Brewers and Cubs. I think I will focus on football and Illini recruiting. I will likely still check scores/standings, until it is hopeless, because I am a gluten for punishment.

I keep turning the game on mlb.tv for some dome reason too. Most likely the exact reason you stated. I mean, heck, we are Illini fans.

As a Nats fan in a disappointing season, I am glad for Lester. He seems like a great guy and had hopes for him here and for the season, but certainly has struggled. Got off to a rough start in STL, too, but I hope he keeps it up for you down the stretch and pulling for the Redbirds all the way. Lane Thomas (who I know really, really struggled for you guys) is doing great in DC. Change of scenery making a difference, I don't know. He's hitting over .300 since coming here and is playing well in the field. Hope Lester keeps it up and helps you guys push into the playoffs. Maybe a win-win if it works out.

Thanks for the update. Happy for you that Thomas is working out for the Nationals.

20 years ago tonight, Bud Smith no-hit the Padres in only his 11th major league start:

Unfortunately this would be the lone highlight for Smith in his career as he would be part of the Scott Rolen trade the following July and didn't pitch in the majors again after the 2002 season.

This is also the most recent no-hitter thrown by a Cardinals pitcher.

Just saw we are supposed to face Scherzer tomorrow. We are so getting no-hit.

I didn't watch game but let me see.... Shildt brings in Alex Reyes with one out in the ninth and the bases loaded to protect a 3 run lead. Facing a guy hitting .215 with 16 rbi's on the year and guy promptly hits a game winning grand slam. Yep....sounds about right. 😜😠

Again I ask, how bad would we be without Waino? Changes need to be made high up. I have a feeling the puppet Girsch will go and maybe Schildt. Unfortunately they sell too many corporate tickets to see a big enough drop to hit Mo.

Reyes was only brought in after Gallegos, who is apparently the de facto closer now, had loaded those bases. I'm pretty sure Vogelbach hit the first pitch Reyes threw.
